1) [ECCWO - 4th International Symposium – last call for abstracts] The 4th International Symposium on the Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Oceans (ECCWO) held between 4th and 8th June 2018 in Washington DC(USA), will include a session: S6 The deep ocean under climate change. The full program and call for abstracts for the 18 sessions and 6 dedicated workshops are now published. The deadline for early registration and abstract submissions – 15th December2017.
2) [The 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting] The 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) will be held between 11th and 16th February 2018, in Portland (Oregon, USA). The OSM is an important venue for scientific exchange across broad marine science disciplines. Sessions will include all aspects of oceanography, especially multidisciplinary topics, as well as presentations that reflect new and emerging research on the global ocean and society, including science education, outreach and public policy. Early registration deadline – 3rd January 2018.
3) [15th DSBS] The 15th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium is the main event for the Deep-Sea Biology Society, and takes place every three years. It brings together leaders from the fields of research, exploration, marine operations, conservation, and management for the deep ocean environment, including benthic, vents and seeps, and water-column biology and oceanography. The 15th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium is supported by the Deep-Sea Biology Society and co-hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The next meeting will be held from 9th to 14th September 2018 in Monterey, California, USA. Abstract submission and early registration open on 18th December 2018 and close on 30th March 2018.
4) [CBE7 – call for organizers of the next meeting]
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to inform you that the outcome of the poll on the timing of future editions of the International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems was in clear favor of switching to a 3-year cycle. That means that CBE7 will be held in 2020. Some groups expressed an interest in hosting the next meeting, and in order to proceed with as much transparency and fairness to the community as possible, we are now inviting those interested to submit proposals for hosting the next meeting in 2020.
We are hereby requesting proposals in the form of a 2-page document that describes the proposed venue, anticipated range of costs, anticipated dates and number of delegates, benefits of hosting the meeting in the proposed venue, and any other relevant information. 5) [Survey on GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017]GEOTRACES is an international project that is creating a detailed baseline of the global distribution of trace elements and isotopes in the ocean. GEOTRACES released its second Intermediate Data Product at the Goldschmidt meeting in August 2017 in Paris, France. The purpose of this survey is to assess the processes used for this second release in order to improve the processes used in the next release, expected in 2021. Please click on the link to take part in this short survey on the GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017. It should take about 5 minutes to complete. Your contribution will help us improve the data product for the next release, expected in 2021.

1) [4th WCMB – last call for abstract submissions] The 4th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity will be held at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal (Québec, Canada) from 13th to 16th May 2018. This meeting brings together scientists, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss and advance our understanding of the importance and current state of biodiversity in the marine environment. The conference program addresses marine biodiversity across a deliberately wide range of relevant sectors. The abstract submission closes on 1st December 2017.
2) [The next AGU Fall Meeting – reminder] The next AGU Fall Meeting (American Geophysical Union) will be held from 11th to 15th December 2017 in New Orleans (Louisiana, USA). The InterRidge co-chair Jérôme Dyment will represent our program at the meeting. Please, feel free to contact him. Here we highlight several sessions of interest for the InterRidge community.
3) [European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2018] will take place in Vienna (Austria) from 8th to 13th April 2018. The EGU General Assembly 2018 will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience. 4) [3rd European Mantle Workshop] will take place in the historical University of Pavia (Italy) from 26th to 28th June 2018. The workshop aims at providing a framework of advanced knowledge on the evolution of the Earth’s mantle. The workshop is mainly intended to discuss the mantle beneath Europe and neighboring areas; presentations from other parts of the world are welcome. Oral and poster presentations are scheduled. 1) [IR Fellowships – received applications] In our second call of Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, we received 6 applications. The applicants, 3 women and 3 men, are 4 graduate students and 2 postdoctoral researchers pursuing their research in China, France, Germany or USA and originally from China, France, Nigeria, Spain or USA. The proposed host countries are Canada, China, France/Poland, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. Applications will be sent out to specialists in the community and validated by the Steering Committee. If you are solicited, thank you in advance for your efforts to evaluate them in due time.

3) [Results of the survey on timing of the next CBE Symposium] The organizers of the 6th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE6) in September 2017 closed the poll on the frequency of CBE symposia. There were 99 respondents: 91 voting for switching to a 3-year cycle and 8 for keeping a 4-year cycle. Thank you for your participation.

1) [Revision of the InterRidge Code of Conduct] A revision of the ‘Code of conduct for responsible research at hydrothermal vents’ has been identified as a priority at the last InterRidge Steering Committee meeting. Ten years after its first publication, this community-wide ethical engagement needs updating. The development of research efforts and methods, as well as new topics related to environmental impact and resilience studies, genetic resources and metadata sharing or cumulative human imprint on deep-sea environments raise important issues. An outline of the revised version is being drafted, and will serve as a basis of discussion with the community, before approval by the InterRidge Steering Committee. A first discussion led by Nadine Le Bris at the 6th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE6) allowed identification of a preliminary writing team. Any suggestions are welcome to the InterRidge Coordinator.
2) [Survey on timing of the next CBE Symposium] At the end of the 6th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE6) in September 2017 the plan for the next symposium was discussed. Previously, CBE6 has been on a 4-year cycle. Many people spoke in favor of switching to a 3-year cycle of meetings which would assist in ensuring no overlap with other major meetings such as the Deep-Sea Biology Symposium (planned in 2018) or Deep-Sea Coral Symposium (planned in 2019). A new 3-year cycle would place the next CBE meeting in 2020.
The organizers need your input on whether to keep the CBE symposia on their traditional 4-year rotation, or switch to a 3-year cycle. Please vote here by 30th October 2017.
3) [Comments on the ISA “Draft regulations on exploitation of mineral resources in the Area”] The International Seabed Authority is currently developing rules about the exploitation of seabed minerals. The Secretariat of the ISA has made available a document entitled “Draft regulations on exploitation of mineral resources in the Area” (ISBA/23/LTC/CRP.3*) for comment by stakeholders. Other details concerning comments together with a list of questions are outlined in document ISBA/23/C/12.
Responses are to be sent to consultation@isa.org.jm by 17th November 2017. Responses will be consolidated and provided to the Legal and Technical Commission at its meeting to be held in March 2018.
As scientists working on mid-ocean ridge, we are all stakeholders. You may express your views directly to the ISA. If you choose to do so, we would appreciate receiving a copy of your comments at interridge@ipgp.fr. We are also considering preparing a comment and would value any contribution that you may wish to send us.

1) [IR Fellowships] Second call – InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2017.
The InterRidge Office is pleased to announce the launch of the second round of Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in 2017. As part of InterRidge’s mission to promote international, collaborative, and interdisciplinary studies of oceanic spreading centers, we invite proposals for InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowships of up to 5000 US$ each. These Fellowships are designed to encourage international collaboration on any aspect of ridge-crest science by graduate students or postdoctoral researchers, fostering long-standing partnerships for their future careers. The Fellowships can be used for any field of ridge-crest research in line with the Third Decadal Plan (2014-2023) of InterRidge. Proposals out of this scope will not be considered. These awards may be used, for instance, for cruise participation or laboratory work by adding an international dimension to the Fellow’s research.
In this second call in 2017 we may offer up to 3 IR Fellowships including 1 joint IR-ISA Endowment Fund Fellowship. Fellowships funded by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Endowment Fund are open either to graduate students or postdocs from developing countries, or to young scientists from any other country if the application demonstrates that it will benefit ridge-related science in developing countries.

2) [Report from SCOR meeting] – InterRidge is affiliated to SCOR, the Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research (www.scor-int.org), and was represented at the SCOR 43rd Executive Committee Meeting held on September 4-6 in Cape Town, South Africa. SCOR scientific activity mostly relies on working groups appointed for 3 years after a rigorous and competitive selection process. For instance InterRidge and SCOR recently supported a common working group on "hydrothermal energy transfer and its impact on the ocean carbon cycle". The meeting was a good opportunity to explore possible interactions and future cooperation, for instance through the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE 2, www.iioe-2.incois.gov.in/IIOE-2 and IR Info #04/2017) or with the GEOTRACES Project which coordinates ocean-scale sections of trace elements and their isotopes (www.geotraces.org).
3) [IR Cruise Bursaries] InterRidge offers Cruise Bursaries to help early career ridge-crest scientists to participate in mid-ocean ridge research cruises. Applicants should have a clear role on the research cruise and not be part of the original research team. Bursaries up to 2000 US$ each are awarded for travel and subsistence costs required to join the cruise. The call is open all year long. We invite graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to apply as early as possible for a timely processing of their application.

InterRidge Info #09/2017 (11th September 2017)
1) [CBE6] The 6th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE6), organized by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), took place from Aug. 27th to Sept. 1st in Woods Hole (Massachusetts, USA).
More than 160 participants took part in the symposium, which included 4 plenary sessions and 72 talks. A total of 68 posters were presented along with 18 selected flash talks. The program of the congress included several topics such as biogeography, biogeochemistry, chemosynthetic habitats and society, community structure and dynamics, evolution and evolutionary history, metapopulation and metacommunity (including connectivity and resilience), microbiology, physiology and adaptation, symbiosis, and trophic interactions (including chemosynthetic energy transfer). Questions about gaps and challenges of the deep-sea research were the main subject of the panel discussion ending the conference. It has been also decided to organize the next CBE Symposium in 3 years, earlier than usually. Thanks and congratulations to local organizing committee for the excellent meeting.
2) [40th anniversary of the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents] The CBE6 offered an opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents at the Galapagos Spreading Center in 1977. Ahead of the conference, a public talk from the Morse Colloquial Series by Dr. Bob Ballard was an excellent occasion for all, from young scientists to pioneers who had the chance to participate to the early studies, to share information on the expedition programs that led to the « Discovery of Deep-Sea Vents » . He reminded that these discoveries have been possible through tight collaboration between underwater technology teams, geoscience international networks and deep-sea biologist and ecologists. The opening talk of the CBE6 Symposium by Pr. Jim Childress offered his physiologist view to the 4 decades of outstanding discoveries that followed the discovery life at deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
3) [Interridge activity during the CBE6 Symposium] InterRidge open meeting took place on 29th August. Kamil Szafranski (IR coordinator) introduced the InterRidge activities with particular focus on actions supporting early career scientists. Stace Beaulieu (WHOI) presented the vent database and highlighted some aspects of its upcoming revision. Nadine Le Bris (IR co-chair) has launched the discussion about the revision of the Code of Conduct on responsible research practices at hydrothermal vents.
InterRidge has awarded Travel Grants to 11 students and 3 post-docs from 8 countries in order to foster exchange across fields and disciplines and promote international collaboration, by increasing the participation of early career scientists at symposia.
We have also participated to the General Assembly and young scientist meeting of the Deep-Sea Biology Society and took the opportunity to present and discuss about InterRidge’s support initiatives to early career scientists.
4) [Upcoming Conferences] The 18th edition of the biennial International Symposium on Deep Seismic Profiling of the Continents and their Margins (SEISMIX 2018) will be held on 17th - 22nd June 2018 in Cracow, Poland. As in the previous symposium of the SEISMIX series, the main subject will be the structure of the crust and upper mantle of the continents and their margins using controlled source seismic methods and methodological developments leading to a better imaging of subsurface. The conference topics will also include (but are not strictly limited to): passive and active continental margins (structure and processes), continental rifts and sedimentary basins, and mid-ocean ridges and oceanic lithosphere. 1) [23rd annual session of the International Seabed Authority] The 23rd annual session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) has been held in Kingston, Jamaica (8-18 August). InterRidge, as observer, attended the Assembly and Council sessions. Below are summarized the main items of the Session with links to the referenced documents.
Council:
- Report on the status of contracts for exploration (ISBA/23/C/7).
- Report on laws, regulations and administrative measures adopted by sponsoring states and other members with respect to the activities in the Area (ISBA/23/C/6). Suggestion that the LTC drafts a model law in order to strengthen the role of the Authority as a regulatory body.
- Approbation of the application of Poland (ISBA/23/C/11) for polymetallic sulphides exploration on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the EEZ of Portugal and the exploration permit granted to France.
- Extension of India’s contract for polymetallic nodules exploration (ISBA/23/C/9).
- Report of the Legal and Technical Commission (ISBA/23/C/13) summarizing (among others) contractor compliance to their obligations.
- Draft exploitation regulations and a roadmap for the delivery of the draft regulations (ISBA/23/LTC/6). Member states and contractors were called to partner with the Secretariat on developing Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) in light of the exploitation regulations and the applications for exploration contracts.
Assembly:
- Annual Report of the Secretary-General (ISBA/23/A/2), followed by a long discussion. The need for development of draft exploitation regulations and for cooperation with relevant international organizations has been highlighted.
- Final report of the Article 154 Review Committee (ISA’s first periodic review) (ISBA/23/A/3), followed by a discussion on its 19 recommendations – including a review of the LTC’s working methods to cope with its increasing workload; the need to develop a strategic plan of ISA; and high-quality data management and sharing system. Several countries suggested to share environmental data collected by contractors during exploration.
The presence of InterRidge at the ISA session gave the opportunity to introduce IR activities in extending our knowledge on mid-ocean ridges (e.g. working groups and workshops), disseminating information (e.g., vent database), and developing capacity building (e.g., fellowships and cruise-bursaries). InterRidge expressed its readiness to collaborate with the ISA through our collective scientific expertise, to ensure a proper balance between sustainable development and protection of the marine environment.
2) [Call for submissions for the InterRidge News - reminder] We would appreciate knowing in advance if you plan to submit an article to the next volume of InterRidge News, to be published in November 2017. Our newsletter will contain brief research articles, the ridge cruise schedule, updates from the InterRidge Working Groups and from our National Correspondents, a calendar of upcoming meetings and the rapid publication of preliminary results and cruise reports that do not appear in other publications. We have already received a couple of proposals and we encourage you to share any relevant information and your findings in short texts, accompanied by color high resolution figures.

3) [The 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting] The 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting (OSM) will be held 11-16 February 2018, in Portland (Oregon, USA). The OSM is an important venue for scientific exchange across broad marine science disciplines. Sessions will include all aspects of oceanography, especially multidisciplinary topics, as well as presentations that reflect new and emerging research on the global ocean and society, including science education, outreach and public policy. InterRidge Info #07/2017 (31st July 2017)
1) [The InterRidge Steering Committee meeting summary] The Steering Committee met on 20-21 July in Paris and discussed many aspects of the InterRidge activity, taking decisions on all matters of importance for the program (scientific strategies, actions to be taken, procedures, budget…). Before the final report is adopted, we summarize below the discussions and the decisions taken.
A) Twelve voting representatives, both co-chairs and two Working Group leaders participated at the meeting. National and Working Group updates were presented by the national representatives. The coordinator summarized the activity of InterRidge Office in its report.
B) The Steering Committee has decided to support the creation of two new Working Groups (Working Group on Oceanic Transform Faults & Working Group IMOVE: Integrating Multidisciplinary Observations in Vent Environments), pending minor modifications of the proposals, and has recommended some more substantial improvements after which the three other proposals will be reconsidered, if the proponents choose to resubmit them.
C) The applications for IR/ISA Endowment Fund fellowships of Seyedeh Elnaz Naghibi, Surya Prakash and Egidio Marino have been accepted for funding, pending acceptance of the ISA. Two applications for the InterRidge Cruise Bursaries (Alexander Diehl and Zhongwei Zhao) have also been validated by the Steering Committee.
D) The application of Poland to join InterRidge as Corresponding Member has been accepted unanimously by the Steering Committee. Dr Teresa Radziejewska (University of Szczecin) will be the Polish national correspondent and will interact with the InterRidge Office.
E) The Steering Committee has accepted the budget of InterRidge for 2017 and the preliminary budget for 2018, pending some minor modifications to the proposed funding plans.
F) The Steering Committee has discussed an improvement of IR rules for more efficiency (budget use, earlier bid for a better transition to next Office, role and rotation of National correspondents). InterRidge will start collecting ideas within the community for update of the IR Code of Conduct.
G) InterRidge will attend the 23rd Session of ISA on 8-18 August 2017 as an observer. Our presence will give the opportunity to discuss many aspects of IR – ISA collaboration like the joint fellowships, reports on IR activity, and will open the discussion about legal questions concerning research activity in the area of permits.
H) Because of a delay in the IR Office installation in France, the Steering Committee members have agreed unanimously to postpone the Office rotation to the end of 2019, pending acceptance by the French funding agencies.
I) An InterRidge Theoretical Institute will be organized in the 2nd half of 2018. The Office will collect ideas for such an Institute within the community and will launch its organization.
J) Norway invites the Steering Committee meeting to take place in Bergen (Norway) in May 2018.

1) [Call for submissions for the InterRidge News] InterRidge News is published annually by the InterRidge Office. The next - 23rd Volume shall be published in November 2017. Our newsletter contains brief research articles, the world ridge cruise schedule, updates from the InterRidge Working Groups and from our National Correspondents, and a calendar of upcoming meetings of interest to the InterRidge community. InterRidge News is intended for the rapid publication of preliminary results and cruise reports that do not appear in other publications. Researchers are encouraged to submit their findings as short articles, up to 4 manuscript pages in length, accompanied by up to 4 color high resolution figures (minimum pixel width = 1000). Articles involving multi-national cooperation are especially encouraged. Please see previous articles in InterRidge Newsletters for reference.
The InterRidge Office will accept the following types of articles:
1) cruise reports: shipboard or immediate post-cruise results,
2) preliminary results of recent field work related to ridge research, back arc basins and ophiolites,
3) general interest articles: new equipment, new ships, opinion articles, workshop reports, news or updates of ridge-related projects.

2) [CBE6 Symposium Info] The 6th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE6) will take place in Woods Hole (Massachusetts, USA) on 27th August – 1st September, 2017. This 6th edition of a successful symposium series that started 20 years ago in Funchal (Madeira, Portugal) is also an occasion to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents at the Galapagos Spreading Center.
The program of Symposium will include diverse chemosynthesis-related topics such as biogeography, biogeochemistry, chemosynthetic habitats and society, community structure and dynamics, evolution, metapopulation and metacommunity, microbiology, physiology and adaptation, symbiosis, as well as trophic interactions.
During the Conference, InterRidge will organize an open meeting where we plan to propose an overview of current InterRidge activities and discuss opportunities to develop new ones. This will also be the occasion to open discussions on the revision of the 2006 release of Code of Conduct on responsible research practice at hydrothermal vents. Your ideas are welcome in the discussion.
As previously announced, InterRidge is awarding Travel Grants to 11 students and 3 post-docs from 8 countries in order to foster exchange across fields and disciplines and promote international collaboration. We look forward to meeting you in Woods Hole!
3) [IR Steering Committee meeting] InterRidge Office is currently preparing the Steering Committee meeting which will take place on 20-21 July at the Institut de Physique du Globe (IPGP) in Paris. InterRidge Info #05/2017 (19th June 2017)
1) [IR Steering Committee meeting] The InterRidge Steering Committee is an assembly of representatives from the Principal and Regular Member Nations of InterRidge. Principal Member Countries have two voting representatives while Regular Member Countries have one. Each Corresponding Member Country has a national correspondent who is welcome as observer at the annual Steering Committee meeting. Working Group Leaders are also invited at the meetings to report on their activity. The Steering Committee monitors the activity of the InterRidge Office and decides on all matters of importance for the program (scientific strategies, actions to be taken, procedures, budget…) that the Office will execute.
This year, the Steering Committee meeting will take place on 20-21 July in Paris. New Working Groups will be discussed and appointed. The evaluation of the IR Fellowship applications will be validated. Major items of discussion will address the update of the IR Code of Conduct, IR – SCOR interaction on the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE2) and InterRidge participation at 23rd Session of the International Seabed Authority.
If you would like a non-listed item to be discussed at the meeting, please send your suggestion to your National Correspondent and/or the InterRidge Office.
2) [IR Working Group – received proposals] We received 5 proposals for 4 new and 1 extended Working Groups. They involve 58 scientists from 12 countries (10 IR contributing members plus Italy and Russia). The new Working Groups will be appointed at the next Steering Committee meeting.
3) [IR Fellowships – received applications] We received 5 applications, including 2 to the IR/ISA Endowment Fund fellowships. The applicants (2 women and 3 men) are 2 graduate students and 3 postdoctoral researchers pursuing their research in Canada, China, India, Spain or United Kingdom and originally from Canada, India, Iran, Italy or Nigeria. The proposed host countries are Germany and the USA. Applications will be sent out to specialists in the community (if you are solicited, thank you in advance for your efforts to evaluate them in due time) and validated by the Steering Committee.
4) [Call for Information] You are invited to provide InterRidge with any relevant information you would like to disseminate within the community, via InterRidge Info or on the InterRidge Website. InterRidge Info #04/2017 (6th June 2017)
1) [IR Membership] The InterRidge Office interacts with national programs, scientists, and funding agencies to increase the number of participating countries and provide better support to our community. As of 1st June 2017, InterRidge counts 4 Principal Member countries. Norway has recently upgraded its status to Principal Member. The USA were able to raise the 2017 contribution through a consortium of institutions, hoping for a national funding agency to take over in 2018. China and France kept their status, France contributing twice as the host country. InterRidge counts also 7 Regular Member countries: Japan, India, Korea and UK have entered the process of contributing, Germany and Portugal have confirmed they will do so, while we still expect such a confirmation from Canada. Our other members have Corresponding Member status. Only Principal and Regular Members are entitled to representation in the InterRidge Steering Committee.
If you would like your country to enter InterRidge or raise its status, contact your national correspondent or volunteer to become such a correspondent by contacting the InterRidge Office.
2) [IIOE2] Second International Indian Ocean Expedition
The (first) International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) was decided by the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR) in 1957 and took place between 1962 and 1965. It involved 40 research vessels from 13 countries which, together, collected data in almost all disciplines of the marine sciences over the Indian Ocean.
In the same spirit, the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2) is an international program aiming to engage the scientific community in collaborative research from coastal environments to the deep sea in the Indian Ocean between 2015 and 2020. The program has designed an Implementation Strategy and is organized around 6 scientific themes (ST), 7 working groups (WG) and National Committees. A Steering Committee and two Joint Project Offices (Hyderabad and Perth) are managing it.
Although the program has been initiated by the oceanographic and atmospheric communities, it offers many interesting opportunities for InterRidge scientists. Research vessels gathered in the area will collect data that will help to better define the Indian Ocean ridges. Conversely, ridge scientists leading cruises or projects in the Indian Ocean are invited to join the IIOE2 by getting their project endorsed by the program.
Let's hope for a fruitful and effective collaboration between InterRidge and IIOE2!

4) [IR Fellowships – new deadline] Proposals for InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowships should be submitted electronically to the InterRidge Office by 13th June, 2017. 1) [IR Cruise Bursaries] InterRidge supports Cruise Bursaries to help early career ridge-crest scientists to participate in mid-ocean ridge research cruises. Bursaries, up to 2000 US$ each, are awarded for travel and subsistence costs required to join the cruise. We invite graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to apply. Applicants should have a clear role on the research cruise and not be part of the original research team. Preference will be given to applicants from InterRidge member countries and from countries other than those of the cruise leader.

2) [Spare Berths] Emily Klein (Duke) and Hans Schouten (WHOI), Chief Scientists of the Cocos-Nazca Rift Cruise, are offering 2 to 5 berths to early-career scientists. This ~30-day NSF-funded cruise to the eastern Pacific Ocean is scheduled to depart Manzanillo, Mexico on 1st May 2018, returning to San Diego, USA (subject to change) onboard RV Roger Revelle.
Multibeam bathymetry, magnetic, and gravity data will be collected at western end of the rift, east of triple junction between 102° and 99° W, and ~60 rock dredges will be performed along segments S2-S8.

1) [IR Fellowships] Call for proposals InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2017
The InterRidge Office is pleased to announce the launch of the 2017 Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. As part of InterRidge’s mission to promote international, collaborative, and interdisciplinary studies of oceanic spreading centers, we invite proposals for InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowships of up to 5000 US$ each. These Fellowships are designed to encourage international collaboration on any aspect of ridge-crest science by graduate students or postdoctoral researchers, fostering long-standing partnerships for their future careers. The Fellowships can be used for any field of ridge-crest research. These awards may be used, for instance, for cruise participation or aboratory work by adding an international dimension to the Fellow’s research.
In 2017 we may offer up to 6 IR Fellowships including 3 joint IR-ISA Endowment Fund Fellowships. Fellowships funded by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Endowment Fund are open either to graduate students or postdocs from developing countries, or to young scientists from any other country if the application demonstrates that it will benefit ridge-related science in developing countries.

1) [IR] Call for proposals of new InterRidge Working Groups
InterRidge plays a major role in triggering ridge-related science through its Working Groups (WG). Such WGs are appointed for a limited time on specific ridge-related scientific topics. The InterRidge Office is pleased to announce a call for proposals of new InterRidge Working Groups.
The InterRidge WGs play an essential role in promoting, facilitating, and coordinating new researches that focus on a theme of emerging scientific promise or are conducted in a unique geographic setting along global ridge-crests. Such researches should significantly benefit from the InterRidge coordination. A typical WG is coordinated by two co-chairs and gathers about ten active members reflecting the national and disciplinary diversity of InterRidge. The WGs work closely with the InterRidge Steering Committee and the InterRidge Office. They convene group meetings and community-wide workshops, promote and coordinate new cruises, experiments, and related work.
Proposals should be no more than two page-long and describe the WG objectives, importance and timeliness to ridge-related science, available and required means, and expected achievements. The new WGs should substantially differ in objective from the existing or former WGs (see the InterRidge website). Each proposal should have at least four proponents from at least three InterRidge member countries. Cross-disciplinary proposals will be given special attention. Successful proposals will receive support from the InterRidge Office and funding for one workshop.
This invitation is open to the whole international community. All proposals will be reviewed and the new WGs will be appointed by the InterRidge Steering Committee at its next meeting in Summer 2017.
Proposals should be sent by e-mail to the InterRidge Office by Friday, 2nd June 2017.
2) [Jobs] Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) Postdoctoral Fellow Programme – 4-5 postdoctoral fellow positions are available. More information in Jobs section on the InterRidge website.
3) [News] The deep sea lab at Ifremer (Brest, France) developed a citizen science project 'Deep sea spy' to help annotate the thousands of images recorded in hydrothermal vents using the deep-sea observatories EMSO-Azores and Ocean Networks Canada.Would you like to become a deep sea spy? 4) [Office] The InterRidge Office invites you to send all the relevant information you would like to disseminate within the community, via InterRidge Info or on the InterRidge Website, to the InterRidge Coordinator.
