This is a first announcement of the upcoming workshop dedicated to serpentine and serpentinization processes. These « SERPENTINE DAYS », supported by the French Mineralogical Society (SFMC) & the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO), aims at gathering a large international scientific community around serpentinization processes and their implications in a wide range of disciplines. Keynotes will present the state of the art on key topics that will be discussed with shorter talks and posters.

3.1. Opportunity for early career scientists on R/V Marcus G.Langseth cruise

There is an opportunity for students and early-career scientists to sail on the R/V Marcus G. Langseth in July 2012 on a 10-day cruise on the Cascadia continental margin off Grays Harbor, Washington. We will collect approximately 1000 km of 2D seismic reflection data, with the goal of improving knowledge of subduction processes and the location of the downgoing plate boundary. Berths for approximately 12 additional students/scientists will be available. The cruise is scheduled for July 12-23, 2012, though these dates could change up to one week in either direction; applicants should possess sufficient flexibility in their schedule to accommodate this uncertainty and must arrive in port at least one day prior to sailing. Travel funds will be provided to and from the port of departure (Astoria, Oregon).

The goal of this call for open participation is to help expand the Langseth user base by providing opportunities for students and scientists to directly experience at-sea acquisition of marine seismic data. Participants must have a strong interest in learning field techniques in reflection seismology and be willing to work long hours at sea assisting in data acquisition and processing. Eligible applicants include graduate students and early-career scientists in fields related to marine seismology; in rare cases, senior-level undergraduates may also be eligible. Preference will be given to employees of U.S. institutions. All seismic reflection data will be made publicly available shortly following the cruise.

Applications should be sent electronically by Jan. 31, 2012, to Dr. W. Steven Holbrook (steveh@uwyo.edu) and should include a 2-page CV and a personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) describing the applicant's experience in marine geophysics and motivation for participating in this expedition. Applicants who will be graduate students during summer 2012 must include a letter of support from their advisor. Participants will be ranked by the Marcus Langseth Science Oversight Committee, in consultation with the project PI's (listed below). Applicants will be notified by March 31, 2012.

1.2. Call for applications to join IODP leg 345 to Hess Deep

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program has begun accepting applications for scientific participants on the Hess Deep Plutonic Crust Expedition aboard the JOIDES Resolution. This expedition aims to understand the nature of gabbroic rocks that formed at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise and test competing hypotheses of magmatic accretion and hydrothermal processes in the lower ocean crust. The scientific objectives will address:
(1) the architecture of the oceanic crust inferred from ophiolites and geophysical observations along modern fast-spreading ridges
(2) the extent and nature of heat and mass fluxes between the asthenosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere reservoirs.
This includes;
(1) how is the lower ocean crust accreted at fast-spreading ridges, and how does this relate to the differentiation of mid-ocean ridge basalts;
(2) where, when, and at what temperature do hydrothermal fluids penetrate into the lower oceanic crust, and what effect do these have on the heat and chemical budgets near the ridge axis;
(3) how quickly does the lower oceanic crust cool, what is the thermal structure at the ridge axis, and how do the magmatic and hydrothermal systems interact to determine the thermal regime.

2.2. Mid-ocean ridge processes: melting and melt extraction from a heterogeneous mantle. Session at EGU, 22-27 April 2012, Vienna, Austria

Mid-ocean ridges are our best window into the upper mantle because of their relatively well-understood dynamics and their broad and continuous sampling through extraction of partial melts. They therefore provide the context to address a persistent challenge: understanding the mechanism of sampling, as well as the nature, origin and consequences of chemical heterogeneity in the mantle. Especially relevant are questions such as: What is the "initial condition" of the MOR mantle source? How do heterogeneities melt? How is magma extracted and mixed? How is the chemical signature of the mantle source transposed to the erupted basalts?

This interdisciplinary session welcomes all contributions to answering these and related questions.

The deep waters and seabed of the world ocean constitute the largest biosphere on this planet, supporting a wealth of species and habitat diversity, performing key ecosystem functions and providing valuable food and energy resources. Once considered pristine, the deep sea (from 200-11,000 m) is under increasing pressure from potentially destructive extraction activities such as fishing, oil and gas exploitation and minerals mining, as well as waste and contaminant disposal, bioprospecting, and scientific research. CO2-driven climate change is also altering deep-sea species distributions and ecosystem processes with attendant effects on services and functions. In addressing these issues, EEZs and international waters face different regulatory landscapes. We invite talks that address conservation issues in pelagic and benthic realms of the slope, abyss and trenches. Topics of interest include but are not limited to human and climate-change impacts in the deep-sea, current conservation science issues and needs, marine policy instruments, management options, and global challenges. Presentations are welcome from science, industry, government and NGOs. (3 ,9, 11)

2.1. R/V Celtic Explorer - VENTuRE expedition

The Irish-led VENTuRE scientific expedition aboard the national research vessel RV Celtic Explorer has discovered a previously uncharted field of hydrothermal vents along the mid-Atlantic ridge – the first to be explored north of the Azores. The mission, led by Dr. Andy Wheeler of University College, Cork (UCC), used the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Holland 1 to discover the Moytirra vent field.

It was discovered in July that Axial Seamount experienced a significant volcanic eruption in April of this year. Groups of scientists on several research vessels have been gathering data about this eruption. The deep waters and seabed of the world ocean constitute the largest biosphere on this planet, supporting a wealth of species and habitat diversity, performing key ecosystem functions and providing valuable food and energy resources. Once considered pristine, the deep sea (from 200-11,000 m) is under increasing pressure from extraction activities such as fishing, oil and gas exploitation and minerals mining, as well as waste and contaminant disposal, bioprospecting, and scientific research. CO2-driven climate change is also altering deep-sea species distributions and ecosystem processes with attendant effects on services and functions. In addressing these issues, EEZs and international waters face different regulatory landscapes. We invite talks that address conservation issues in pelagic and benthic realms of the slope, abyss and trenches. Topics of interest include but are not limited to human and climate-change impacts in the deep-sea, current conservation science issues and needs, marine policy instruments, management options, and global challenges. 2.1. News from R/V Pourquoi Pas? at Lucky Strike

Mathilde Cannat, Jérome Blandin, Pierre Marie Sarradin (co-chiefs of the MoMARsat 2011 cruise)

We are leaving the Lucky Strike volcano and hydrothermal vents after an eventful 4-week cruise during which we successfully reinstalled all the components of the EMSO-Azores standalone seafloor observatory:

-the two seafloor SEAMON (Sea Monitoring) stations and their connected instruments: a 3-components seismometer and a hydrophone for seismic event detection, two pressure probes for geodetic measurements, a video camera, a dissolved-iron analyzer, and an optode (oxygen and temperature probe) for ecological time studies.
- the BOREL transmission buoy, equipped with GPS (geodetic experiment and buoy location) and meteo station.

Everybody on board worked very hard for this success!

The system is improved compared to last year, with new lower consumption acoustic modems, a revised earthquake detection software, more solar panels and a new GPS for the buoy. It transmits data every 6 hours to the ESONET-EMSO data node at the SISMER in Brest. Data from Lucky Strike have been available there for a year now. Our next effort will be to offer a more user friendly web interface to visualize and access the Azores node near realtime data set.

Endeavour, 2.3 km deep, July 8-10: Fields of hot vents near the tectonic spreading ridge

A BARS instrument—which helps scientists understand the hostile chemistry inside active hot vents—had shown electrical troubles after installation. The team discovered that a new vent chimney had sprung up under its power/internet cable. The instrument was retrieved and will be reinstalled in September. 2.3. GALREX 2011 Expedition underway at Galápagos Rift

Leg II (July 11-28) of the Galápagos Rift Expedition (GALREX) 2011 is underway with a team of scientists and technicians both at-sea and on shore. Mapping and water column information collected during Leg I identified a number of exciting targets to explore with the Institute for Exploration’s Little Hercules ROV. During Leg II the team will explore seamounts, the oldest known vent fields, off-axis sulfide mounds, deep fracture zones, and newly-discovered vents.

Deep-sea hydrothermal systems provide a window into the subseafloor environment and a transport mechanism for fluids sourced deep within the earth’s crust out into the open ocean. At the interface between the seafloor and the ocean, fluids flowing from the crust provide a redox rich environment which is exploited by both micro- and macro organisms. Even up in the water column, chemistry and biology sourced from deep within the crust continues to influence the open ocean on a global scale. This session aims to bring in chemical, biological and geological studies from each of these environments, to provide our audience with perspectives from the hydrothermal system as a whole and the interconnectivities between each locality. We encourage contributions from both field and laboratory studies that investigate the influence of hydrothermal circulation on the subsurface, seafloor and open ocean, as well as how the local environment affects the fluids themselves. The combination of biogeochemical studies in extreme environments such as the hydrothermal system, will enable us to understand the limits and constraints on life, which not only has important relevance for our own planet, but also for the extraterrestrial system.

4.1. ISA approves four applications for exploration licences

The ISA has approved the plans of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules and polymetallic sulphides in the international deep seabed Area submitted by four entities. They are Nauru Ocean Resources Inc. (NORI), sponsored by Nauru, and Tonga Offshore Mining Limited (TOML), sponsored by Tonga. They submitted their applications on 31 March 2008 for exploration for nodules in the reserved Area of the Clarion-Clipperton Fractured Zone. The other two bodies are China Ocean Minerals Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA), and the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of the Russian Federation which submitted their applications on 7 May 2010 and on 24 December 2010 respectively, for approval of their plan of work for exploration for polymetallic sulphides in the Area.

2.1. News from German R/V Sonne (leg SO-216)

Scientists from the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (University of Bremen) and the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology (Bremen) are currrently aboard the German R/V Sonne (leg SO-216, Chief Scientist W. Bach) with the ROV Quest 4000m (MARUM) to sample hydrothermal fluids, sulfur deposits and symbiotic microbial communities in the Manus Basin. We have already discovered new areas of activity on the flanks of North Su and PACMANUS hydrothermal vent fields (previously sampled by the ROV Jason in 2006). Among the most exciting observations to date are spectacular candle-like chimneys composed entirely of molten sulfur, and nearby venting of liquid carbon dioxide. The goals of the cruise are to examine biological diversity associated with the vent areas as well as to document temporal changes in this poorly understood system. 2.2. Expedition AT18-07 on R/V Atlantis, Juan de Fuca Ridge, June 26 - July 14, 2011

This expedition is a follow-on from IODP Expedition 327 during the summer of 2010, when subseafloor observatories (CORKS) were placed in the seafloor on the Juan de Fuca ridge. The overall goal of the expedition is to understand hydrologic properties and processes within volcanic oceanic crust, including links between fluid flow, geochemistry, rock alteration, and subseafloor microbiology. The science and education team on the expedition will also offer "Adopt a Microbe From the Deep Sea Floor," a web-based, interactive module to allow students and educators to follow the mission in real-time, virtually ‘adopt’ a microbe from the bottom of the ocean, and receive daily science updates from the vessel:

Description: Classic models of crustal accretion at mid-ocean ridges assume simple fractionation processes produce observed chemical variations in erupted basalts. Recent gabbro studies and mounting evidence from MORB and OIB geochemistry suggest a more complex magmatic history with possible interaction between percolating melts and a crystal mush. Lower crustal processes have important implications for the composition of erupted basalts and attempts to invert for source composition and melting parameters. The goal of this session is to examine magma storage and interaction in the crust, bringing together evidence from the petrology and geochemistry of extrusive and intrusive rocks, as well as insights from experimental, geophysical and numerical studies.

In this session, the magmatic and geodynamic processes relevant for the formation of oceanic peridotites will be discussed in the light of these new results. We encourage contributions that investigate dredged and drilled abyssal peridotites from ridges, ocean-continent transition zones and ophiolite complexes. The session will cover the entire spectrum of geological sciences, from petrology and geochemistry to geodynamics.

Session on : Marine Biological Diversity: Who Owns the Greatest Reservoir of Unexplored Diversity?

Who owns the biological diversity in the world’s oceans? The oceans cover ~71% of the Earth’s surface, average ~3.8 km in depth and are home to the greatest reservoir of unexplored genetic potential on the planet. Yet, unlike almost all terrestrial systems and coastal waters, life in most areas of the oceans falls outside the jurisdiction, ownership and protection of any state or international agreement. Our understanding of marine biological diversity and the associated genetic resources is rooted in science, but the ownership and management of these resources must be solved on the arena of international dialog, and policy stemming from law. Nations have been grappling with the concept of fair and equitable sharing of Marine Genetic Resources (MGRs) under the Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); yet, there is no agreement on sharing MGRs in areas beyond national jurisdiction. This is particularly troubling given that the most-developed nations are responsible for almost all the patent claims exploiting MGRs. Recent scientific efforts to capture the oceans’ genetic diversity and its distribution across the seas have revealed the enormous biological potential archived in MGRs. Ultimately, scientific exploration will provide the baseline of knowledge required for decisions on the fair and equitable sharing of MGRs.

The ownership and fair and equitable distribution of MGRs is an international challenge for the 21st century that lies at the heart of global interconnectedness. The economic potential wrapped around MGRs is linked to biodiversity, innovation, and development against a backdrop of changing climate. Exploitation of MGRs is leading to technologies that will improve food and energy production, and have already been touted as supplying the genetic potential to create artificial life.

This session aims to show-case the latest work in the field, covering both geological mapping of the seafloor as well as the technological and computer science developments which are driving it.

This session aims to bring together the latest results from the range of techniques used to constrain time scales of submarine magmatic and volcanic processes including, but not limited to, geochronology, lava morphology, seismic and hydroacoustic monitoring, geochemistry, geodesy. We encourage abstract submissions on studies that apply these techniques to submarine and analog volcanic systems, as well as observational or modeling studies that evaluate controls on rates of magmatic processes and links to volcanic crust construction.

Description: We invite presentations to discuss the evolution of oceanic lithosphere. Understanding the structure, composition, thermal evolution, and rheology of the oceanic lithosphere is of fundamental significance to plate tectonics. We focus on lithospheric evolution from its infancy at spreading centers to old seafloor at the perimeter of oceanic basins. We invite presentations from interdisciplinary research that consider seismic velocity structure, seismic anisotropy, mantle petrology, rheology and deformation, geodynamic models for lithospheric cooling and mantle convection, gravity and flexure, seafloor subsidence and heat flow, electrical conductivity, and intra-plate earthquakes, all necessary contributions to oceanic lithosphere formation.

Description: The Juan de Fuca Ridge is one of the most intensively studied mid-ocean ridges in the world. Two sites in particular, the Endeavour Segment and Axial Volcano, have been the focus of intensive studies of mantle melting, crustal formation, and linkages between seafloor volcanoes and chemosynthetic-based biological communities. These sites are now being instrumented for long-term cabled observatories. This session will provide a venue for studies that synthesize our current knowledge of the tectonic, volcanic and hydrothermal processes on the entire Juan de Fuca Ridge including efforts to expand the scope and duration of time series investigations.

Description: Exhumation of mantle-derived rocks is common at slow spreading ridges and is observed or inferred in the distal parts of many divergent continental margins (Ocean Continent Transition-OCT). This session will focus on: 1) the rheology and dynamics of exhumation faults; 2) the interplays of exhumation faults with magmatic and/or hydrothermal systems ; 3) the evolution of the exhumed ultramafics, including chemical and physical exchanges with seawater, and interactions with a sub-seafloor biosphere; and 4) issues related to oil and gas exploration at and near OCTs. The Superfast Expedition is the fourth in a campaign of expeditions aiming to recover gabbros from the ocean crust to better understand the formation and evolution of the oceanic crust. After nearly three weeks of repeated reaming, cleaning, and cementing, the staff and crew of the JOIDES Resolution have successfully recovered their first core from Hole 1256D.

2.1. R/V Poseidon at Atlantis II Deep

Akumbom Vishiti, one of the 2010 winners of the InterRidge/ISA Fellowship awards, is aboard this cruise, along with Colin Devey, Germany's InterRidge StComm member and a former InterRidge Chair. For marine scientists, the Red Sea is a unique area. This marginal sea with a width of 360 kilometres and a length of 2240 kilometres is an infant ocean with similar conditions as in the Atlantic many million years ago. Rimmed by many coral reefs, the deep-sea trench at a depth of 2000 metres is a unique ecosystem. So far it has been very difficult for foreign researchers to carry out research in this area. The new cooperation between IFM-GEOMAR and the King Abdulaziz University provides the German scientists with an excellent opportunity for extended research in the Red Sea. 2.1. JC55 RRS James Cook: Chemosynthetic Ecosystems of the Southern Ocean

17th January: Today has been almost entirely spent travelling south in anticipation of our biogeographical exploration of the Bransfield Strait. We have now crossed 60 degrees South, and so are officially in Antarctica. The only stop we made today was to 'stream' the ROV cable, which involves winching out the cable (sans ROV) to check it is all reeling out without any problems. Apparently they checked 3000 m worth of cable, which is as deep as we will take the ROV (Isis) on this trip.

1.1. Message from the Chair

The past 12 months have been an exciting time for InterRidge with the move of its office to Southampton, the meetings, fellowships and working group activities. This has required a lot of effort from members of the InterRidge community, often done quietly and efficiently in the background, with little personal recognition. So, on behalf of InterRidge, I would like to express a big 'thank you' to everyone for making 2010 such a success! 2011 brings with it both opportunities and potential difficulties. The opportunities for growing InterRidge science are expressed through our community's planned cruises and meetings, the offer of new fellowships, and our cruise bursary scheme to help meld the community together. However, for many InterRidge countries, these are also times of financial troubles with budget cuts in many areas. It is therefore imperative that we, as a community, continue to express the intrinsic value of our science to society and governments alike. We are explorers of our hidden planet; inspiring the young and the old, gaining insights into the Earth's most dynamic processes, discovering inconceivable animal species, driving new technology, and custodians of knowledge that can guide the way Mankind interacts with some of the most extreme but fragile environments on Earth. Let us all deliver this message where it matters and build on InterRidge's successes throughout 2011.

2.1.1. BG7.1. Observing deep sea chemosynthesis in situ: observatories and sensors in the ocean.

The discovery of chemosynthetic based ecosystems at hydrothermal vents in the late 1970's led to a concerted effort by geologists, biologists and chemists to understand these systems. Further discoveries of chemosynthetic environments at cold seeps, mud volcanoes and associated with massive organic inputs in the deep ocean only increased interest and research effort. Driven by seepage, these oases of life are highly dynamic and essential for the biodiversity on the deep ocean floor. Due to their ephemeral nature quantification of the primary production is a challenging task.

Whilst we are starting to understand the fundamental processes of these microbially mediated ecosystems, we are still missing information on the variations that affect these communities at different spatial and temporal scales. The development of observatories along with deployments of benthic chambers, to provide integrated information has become a reality with the recently emplaced systems at the Haakon Mosby mud volcano and the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field by the EC and the Neptune array by Canada. Nevertheless, although we are progressing in understanding the dynamics of these ecosystems, we are still lacking in robust sensors for some of the key drivers of these environments. We will highlight new data from the new observatories and in situ experiments as well as some of the up to date sensor technology under development, with interpretation of that data as part of the SENSEnet, ESONET and Hermione FP7 European projects. This session welcomes input from scientists involved in the field of observatory operations and in situ sensor development.

We are pleased to announce that this session is sponsored by InterRidge and we have funding available for PhD students and early career scientists to attend the meeting, additionally there will be 2 prizes awarded for the best posters presented at the meeting.

The session will discuss various aspects of chemosynthetic ecosystems. Exploration and investigation efforts of the past decade have significantly improved our understanding of the biodiversity and distribution of deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems. These ecosystems are now known from a variety of environments on the seafloor (e.g.: hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, deep anoxic hypersaline basins, massive organic falls like whales skeletons, sunken woods,.etc). Also the knowledge of biogeochemical processes and biological interaction sustaining chemosynthetic ecosystems, and their role in the evolution of marine biodiversity is increasing. However, challenging issues remain the discovery of chemosynthetic ecosystems in remote ocean systems, the temporal dynamics of these ecosystems, their influence on ocean biogeochemical cycles, and their sensitivity to anthropogenic impact. In particular, the mechanisms governing the interactions between chemosynthetic communities and the abiotic environment, and the multitude of microbial metabolisms in sustaining these ecosystems need further investigation, especially with regard to quantification. This session will welcome advanced multidisciplinary studies on these unique ecological and biogeochemical ecosystems, as well as technological developments for the exploration, observation, experimentation, and monitoring at various scales on the seafloor.
