Members of the Census of Marine Life community and a Science Planning Committee have been preparing a scientific strategy to catalyze a new program of integrated international research in marine biodiversity in the spirit of the first Census but addressing new questions and emerging themes of importance to the scientific community and society as a whole.

The aim of the “Beyond 2010” workshop is to present and discuss this strategy, with a focus on engagement of the broader scientific community and plans and actions for implementation.

This international school is dedicated to extreme marine environments and deep-sea ecosystems, with a focus on interdisciplinary issues. The 3-week course is open to Master and PhD students, and is hosted at the University Paris 6 marine station of Banyuls.

A limited number of grants for travel and accomodation is available upon request to Nadine Le Bris (nlebris@obs-banyuls.fr).

The Oceanographic Institute, Paris, together with many other institutions, aims to:
- Assess today’s knowledge of the deep seas by combining scientific and industrial expertise,
- Evaluate new technologies available on the short or medium term to explore or exploit the deep seas, in regard to sustainable management and protection,
- Consider proposals and actions leading to sustainable management along with adequate international governance,
- Inform and warn public opinion and mass media about the issues of the deep seas.
