Discussion on "High-throughput sequencing approaches in the Deep-Sea"

Thursday 6th December, 2012. 17:15.
Leaders of the discussion: Dr Sophie Plouviez, Dr Holly Bik.
Funding support: this discussion is supported by INDEEP

High-throughput sequencing approaches (e.g., Illumina, 454 platforms) are increasingly popular methods for characterizing novel biodiversity and investigating population connectivity, phylogenetic relationships and ecosystem function. Marker gene (rRNA), metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic studies are now generating unprecedented amounts of data, but face significant bioinformatic bottlenecks for downstream computational analysis and biological interpretations. The deep-sea community has been slow to adopt genomic approaches, with the majority of studies harnessing these cutting-edge techniques remaining unpublished. The “High-Throughput” discussion at the 13th International Deep-Sea Biology Symposium will provide an overview of sequencing technologies and genomic techniques, enable researchers share methods, data, and ideas, and emphasize a lively discussion of the challenges relating to the use of these techniques in deep-sea ecosystems.
