We are pleased to announce that the 16th International Symposium on Polar
Sciences will be held in Incheon, South Korea, on June 10-12, 2009. Korea Polar
Research Institute (KOPRI) annually hosts polar scientists in the world to discuss the
progress and future of polar sciences.

Abstract deadline: 17 April 2009
This year, the symposium will be dedicated in particular to celebrate launch of a
brand new icebreaker, R/V Araon. Thereby the themes of this symposium will be
focused on the polar research that can be achieved on platform of icebreaker or
research vessel in the field of geosciences under the banner of “Polar Exploration with
Araon”.
This year the symposium will focus on:
(1) interaction of polar ocean systems to the changing climate,
(2) past climate archived in the polar oceans and ice-sheets,
(3) exploration of hydrothermal vent system in the polar oceans, and
(4) tectonics and magmatism at the polar ocean ridges.
