InterRidge Info #3/2020 (19th February 2020)
1) [Help in assessing the relevance of criteria for Sites in Need of Protection at active vents on the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge]Following the ISA workshop on Regional Environmental Management Plan for the area of the Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge organized in November 2019 in Evora, Portugal, the “active vent group” started to review the scientific literature for an assessment of active vent sites as Sites in Need of Protection.
In agreement with the ISA secretariat, the participantshave continued to work on the assessment after the workshop. Sufficient scientific information (typically peer reviewed papers) has been found, allowing to assess the relevance of criteria for Sites in Need of Protection at active vents on the northern Mid-Atlantic ridge for most sites, but still some data gaps need to be filled. The assessment concerns the 11 confirmed active vent sites between ~3°N and 30°N (Lost City, Broken Spur, TAG, Snake Pit, Pobeda, Logatchev 1, Logatchev 2, Semyenov 2, Irinovskoe, Ashadze 2 and Ashadze 1). Please read this letter for more details on where we still have data gaps. In case you have information in regard to these specific data gaps, please contact Sabine Gollner before the 1st March 2020.
The goal is to have a complete assessment, that will be included in a peer-reviewed article on the subject. The publication shall, in agreement with the ISA secretariat, be considered at the next ISA workshop (15-19 June 2020) where further management measures for the N MAR are going to be discussed.
2) [7th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems] Registration for the 7th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE7) is now open. InterRidge Info #1/2020 (15th January 2020)
1) [Transition of the InterRidge Office to Korea] Year 2019 has been very active for InterRidge, with the organization of three workshops (Workshop on Integrated Multidisciplinary Observations in Vent Environments – IMOVE, in Bergen, Norway; Workshop on Hydrothermal Ore-forming Processes and the Fate of Seafloor Massive Sulfides Deposits along Slow and Ultraslow Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges, in Hangzhou, China; Workshop on Seamounts and Islands Associated With Mid-Ocean Ridges, in Lisbon, Portugal) and the Theoretical Institute "Hydrothermalism in 4D: current challenges and emerging issues" in Banyuls, France, the selection and funding of 3 Fellowships and 2 Cruise Bursaries to support young scientists, and fruitful interactions with SCOR and ISA, to cite only a few. An important step is the decision of the Steering Committee to officially extend the scope of InterRidge to the whole deep ocean floor research.
At the very end of 2019, the Steering Committee accepted the bid of Seoul National University submitted by Prof. Lee Sang-Mook to host the InterRidge Office for the period 2020-2022, with a 3-month transition period to transfer the Office from Paris to Seoul. We are now starting this transition period, the Paris and Seoul Offices being both active until 31 March 2020.
The InterRidge Office in Paris takes the opportunity to wish the best of luck to our successors in Seoul, and a long life to InterRidge!
2) [Final report from the workshop of the Working Group SMS MOR] Final Report from the InterRidge Workshop on “Hydrothermal Ore-forming Processes and the Fate of Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMS) Deposits along Slow and Ultraslow Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges (MOR)” organized by the Working Group on SMS deposits along MOR, between 19 and 22 September 2019 in Hangzhou (China) can be read under this link.
3) [Early Career Scientist Award funded by Working Group SMS MOR] To encourage young scientists to carry out research on Seafloor Massive Sulfides Deposits, the Working Group has decided to select one excellent early career scientist from worldwide to grant him/her the Excellent Early Career Scientist in SMS Award at the next workshop in 2020. More details about the Award and how to apply can be found here.
4) [Crowdfunding for SCOR Visiting Scholars Program] The SCOR Committee on Capacity Building is in the process of evaluating applications for the 2020 class of SCOR Visiting Scholars. As usual, SCOR has more good applications than the funds available. SCOR should be able to support 5 Visiting Scholars in 2020 from traditional sources. For the past several years, the Committee has supported part of a sixth Visiting Scholar through crowdfunding.
If you would like to make a financial contribution to one SCOR Visiting Scholar, a giving page has been set up at https://www.mightycause.com/story/Whps7f. 100% of the funds will be used to support the SCOR Visiting Scholar. Thank you to those of you who have contributed in the past.
5) [International workshop DriMMLOC at Tongji University in Shanghai] An international workshop DriMMLOC “Drilling the Mantle, Moho and Lower Oceanic Crust” will be held on 7-9 May 2020 at Tongji University in Shanghai (China). The workshop will present the latest developments across a broad spectrum of earth science disciplines, including tectonics, geophysics, petrology and biogeochemistry to address the main question of how do the styles of formation of the oceanic lithosphere vary with spreading rate and magma supply, and how do these influence hydrothermal alteration and microbial activity. More details here.
6) [Three positions of Assistant Professor at University of Hawaii] The Department of Earth Sciences in the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology, University of Hawaii at Manoa seeks to fill three tenure-track faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor in the broad area of active geologic processes. Deadline for applying: 7 Ferbuary 2020.More details under this link.
7) [Happy New Year] At the beginning of Year 2020, we wish to all the members of our community a very happy new year, hoping to see you joining our efforts in the promotion of mid-ocean ridge and deep ocean floor research.
