20 September 2018 The SaltAx expedition aims to map submarine salt flows in high resolution. The mapping will be combined with shallow (sparker) seismics to investigate sedimentary structures and the depth of the uppermost salt reflector. The aim is to understand the kinematics of salt flowage into the Red Sea rift valley and thus the coverage of a volcanically and hydrothermally active mid-ocean rift. Also, the influence of salt blanketing in the rift valley on marine mineral resource formation will be investigated.
