Following the success of our 2008 event, the 2009 International Ocean Stewardship Forum will aim to strengthen the coordination between marine policy making and implementation, with particular focus on two topical themes in marine governance:

• The Arctic Ocean – We are still assessing its potential for resources, and recognising the changing face of navigational and recreational use of its waters, and its expected radical ecosystem change. There is a critical need for appropriate environmental care, and sustainable and stable maritime jurisdiction and oversight.

• Geoengineering – What are the potential issues relating to influencing the properties of the oceans to mitigate anthropogenic affects of (say) greenhouse gas emissions? What could be the benefits and disadvantages from iron-fertilisation, CO2 sequestration, atmospheric seeding with sulphur particles – and what are the international legal aspects?

Marine Geoengineering - International Governance Issues. - Chris Vivian, Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas).
