2. News from the Ridge Crest

2.1. EMSO-Azores standalone seafloor observatory successfully reinstalled for a third year of operation!

We are leaving the Lucky Strike Mid-Atlantic Ridge volcano and hydrothermal vents after an eventful 12 days cruise with RV Thalassa  and VICTOR 6000 ROV. We successfully maintained and reinstalled the components of the EMSO-Azores standalone seafloor observatory:
1 - the two seafloor SEAMON (Sea Monitoring) stations and their connected instruments : a 3-components seismometer and an hydrophone for seismic event detection, two pressure probes for geodetic measurements, a turbidimeter, a video camera, a dissolved-iron analyzer, and an optode (oxygen and temperature probe) for ecological time-studies.
2 - the BOREL transmission buoy, equipped with GPS (buoy location) and meteostation. The buoy communicates acoustically with the seafloor stations and relays data (detection of seismic events, pressure at seafloor, video snapshots, turbidity, fluid temperature and chemistry, system status) via satellite every 6 hours to the Ifremer node of the EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Subsea Observatory) data center.
This system is nested in arrays of autonomous instruments at the seafloor (seismometers, geodetic pressure probes, temperature probes in vents, biological and microbiological colonization devices) and in the water column (oceanographic mooring).

Mathilde Cannat and Pierre Marie Sarradin (co-chiefs).

1.1. Liaison panel for exploration guidelines

At the recent StComm meeting, it was decided that InterRidge should set up a panel to devise guidelines on exploration at vent sites, in collaboration with invited NGOs and industry. These would be similar to the Code of Conduct developed a few years ago, but more outward-looking to all stakeholders, rather than just scientists. It was thought that by bringing all stakeholders together from the beginning, there would be ownership of the guidelines and that this represented the most likely way to a successful outcome.

We are looking to set up a liaison panel of 7-8 InterRidge members with invited guests from NGOs and industry. We are extending an invite for nominations to the whole IR community and the final composition of the liaison panel will be determined by the IR Office. There is an expectation that a number of the panel will attend the IMMS meeting in Shanghai 15-20 October "Marine Minerals: Finding the Right Balance of Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection" Tongji Univ., Shanghai. 3. Upcoming Events

3.1. AGU sessions of interest to IR members, 3-7 Dec 2012, San Francisco

Deadline for abstracts: 8 August 2012

T030: “Marine Magnetics and Plate Tectonics: Remaining Challenges”
Convenors: Jerome Dyment, Kyoko Okino, and Sang Mook Lee

We hope this session will be an opportunity to gather friends and colleagues of the late Professor Kensaku Tamaki, former InterRidge Chair, and pay tribute to his memory. For this purpose, the scope of the session listed below should be taken in the widest sense.

Session description:
Marine magnetic anomalies have been instrumental in the acceptance of plate tectonics ~50 years ago, and have since been used to date the seafloor, decipher the structure of ocean basins, and reconstruct the past evolution of Earth lithosphere. We invite contributions presenting new magnetic anomaly data and compilations of older data to better understand the oceanic lithosphere, ocean floor tectonics, plate kinematics, and geodynamic processes over a variety of settings from mid-oceanic ridges and hot spots to back-arc basins and trenches.

Special attention will be given to studies based on surface or deep-sea magnetic data sets including vector and gradient measurements, methodological developments, or rock magnetic properties.

V040: Serpentinization and Dehydration as Major Processes for Deep Earth Elemental Cycling

Conveners: Ivan Savon (Univ. of Leeds) and Dionysis Foustoukos (CIW)

Invited Contributions: Jeff Alt (Univ. Michigan), Marco Scambelluri (University of Genova), Patricia Fryer (SOEST, Hawai'i), William E. Seyfried (UMN)

Session description::
Serpentinites form when water interacts with ultramafic domains. Serpentinites can host variety of trace elements and their formation is responsible for vast isotopic fractionations (H, O, B, Li, Cl, Sr, Nd, etc). Serpentinite dehydration by returning to the deep mantle via

subduction or during plate collisions, should have important implications for the elemental cycling and for the stable and radiogenic isotope signatures of the deep earth as a whole. We seek contributions addressing these processes, and with emphasis on the in-situ and bulk rock trace element and isotope geochemistry, textural and mineralogical studies and lab experiments.

3.2. Discussion on "High-throughput sequencing approaches in the Deep-Sea". Session at 13th International Deep Sea Biology Symposium, Wellington, New Zealand

Thursday 6th December, 2012. 17:15.
Leaders of the discussion: Dr Sophie Plouviez, Dr Holly Bik.
Funding support: this discussion is supported by INDEEP

High-throughput sequencing approaches (e.g., Illumina, 454 platforms) are increasingly popular methods for characterizing novel biodiversity and investigating population connectivity, phylogenetic relationships and ecosystem function. Marker gene (rRNA), metagenomic, and metatranscriptomic studies are now generating unprecedented amounts of data, but face significant bioinformatic bottlenecks for downstream computational analysis and biological interpretations. The deep-sea community has been slow to adopt genomic approaches, with the majority of studies harnessing these cutting-edge techniques remaining unpublished. The “High-Throughput” discussion at the 13th International Deep-Sea Biology Symposium will provide an overview of sequencing technologies and genomic techniques, enable researchers share methods, data, and ideas, and emphasize a lively discussion of the challenges relating to the use of these techniques in deep-sea ecosystems.

On 24 Feb we cut the Southeast Indian Ridge west of the recent Korean survey, at 60°S and 151°E. We saw a pretty nice axial magnetic anomaly, and perfect sequences of magnetic anomalies up to 40 Ma (on the Australian plate) and 15 Ma so far (on the Antarctic plate).  We approach 65°S, time to get our towed magnetometer onboard and go straight to Dumont D'Urville, the French Antarctic Base. Then we'll do our measurements again back to Hobart, Tasmania, arriving 8 March.

3. Upcoming events

3.1. Session at EGU: Progress in our understanding of serpentinization and related processes, Vienna, Austria, 22-27 April 2012

GMPV3.3/GD1.2/TS3.7
Conveners: M. Godard, M. Andreani, C. Garrido
Deadline for abstract submission: January 17, 2012
Hydration of mantle rocks, whether occurring at the seafloor or in the mantle wedge, results from/in strongly interconnected thermal, mechanical, mineralogical, and chemical processes, and contributes significantly to mass budgets of key chemical compounds (e.g. C, S, Fe, Cl…) from ocean ridges to subduction zones and back into the mantle. It can also sustain ecosystems whose primary energy sources are chemosynthetic. In this session, we encourage contributions ranging from field study (ophiolitic complexes, dredges or drilled samples and hydrothermal fields, among other settings), thermodynamic and numerical modeling to experimental work on serpentinization processes at mid-ocean ridges and in subduction zones. We also seek contributions on observational, theoretical and/or experimental studies on companion processes, in particular those related to C cycle such as carbonation of ultramafic rocks and their potential for CO2 sequestration in nature.
To submit an abstract please follow this link: http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2012/session/9663

1. InterRidge Info

1.1. Letter from the Chair

Happy New Year to all InterRidge members! 2012 is the last year for the InterRidge Office at the National Oceanography Centre in the UK. So we are starting the New Year with a call for bids to host the next 3 years of the InterRidge Office. This is an exciting time for ridge crest science with new ideas emerging about how slow spreading oceanic crust forms, with cabled observatories extending to active ridges, and the prospect of industrial mining of hydrothermal sulphide deposits testing our community's resolve to engage with policy makers and industry alike. InterRidge continues to make substantial progress: promoting new science directions and  receiving proposals for new Working Groups.  We held a well attended planning workshop in December to set the scene for InterRidge's third decade. We have also received a boost of new funding from the United Nations' International Seabed Authority  for an increased number of fellowships, the first of which are now advertised for this year. The cruise bursary scheme is also becoming better known – but we still rely on everyone to pass the message on: if you are an early career scientist and want to collaborate on a research cruise, we have the travel funding to help you. Finally, let us know about your cruises, research and needs to collaborate: we are here to help you make those vital contacts and let everyone know of your latest achievements.

Wishing everyone a following sea.

2. News from the Ridge Crest

2.1. R/V SONNE cruise to eastern Manus Basin

Between June 14 and July 23 of 2011 a science team lead by Wolfgang Bach of the MARUM research center in Bremen used the German research vessel SONNE for hydrothermal studies in the Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea. During the transits and in the Manus Basin, bathymetric maps of the seafloor were produced. In the study area, the ROV MARUM-QUEST was used to map and sample hydrothermal vent systems in water depths between 1150 and 1800 meters below sealevel. Quest can document venting with HD photos and videos and take samples of rocks, fauna, and fluids. The international team of scientist onboard included geologists, geochemists, microbiologists, ecologists, and biogeochemists. The main goal was examinations of the numerous and varied vents with specific focus on interactions between geochemical and biological processes.
