Spare berth on SMARTIES Cruise

French research cruise SMARTIES of RV “Pourquoi Pas?” and deep-sea submersible “Nautile” will take place between 12 July and 24 August 2019 on the intersection of the Mid-Atlandtic Ridge axis and the Romanche Transform Fault. Port calls will be on the Cape Verde Islands.

InterRidge Cruise Bursaries

InterRidge supports Cruise Bursaries to help early career ridge-crest scientists to participate in international mid-ocean ridge research cruises. Bursaries are awarded for travel and subsistence costs required to join the cruise. Please see the recipients of awards since 2011. We invite graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to apply.

Two students are awarded Cruise Bursaries to participate the VESPA cruise

Two students, Mederic Amman (University of Strasbourg, France) and Nina Jordan (University of Leicester, UK), are awarded the InterRidge Cruise Bursaries to participate the VESPAN Cruise in May-June 2015. The interRidge office would like to thank the PIs  Nick Mortimer and Martin Patriat for providing opportunity to students to gain first-hand experience on board. 

Cruise Berth available

A forthcoming 27 day French-New Zealand research cruise is scheduled on l'Atalante for mid-2015. The cruise is called VESPA (Volcanic Evolution of South Pacific Arcs). It is a 27 day cruise, that will start and finish in Noumea, New Caledonia, sometime in the window 15 May-16 June 2015.

InterRidge awards three cruise bursaries for the cruise to Rainbow hydrothermal field, MAR

Following a very high level of interest in the Rainbow cruise, the following have been selected to receive InterRidge cruise travel bursaries:

Cruise bursary available for OCEANOGRAFLUX cruise to MAR, June 2013

The Chief Scientists on the OCEANOGRAFLUX cruise are offering  a spare berth to an early-career scientist and InterRidge is supporting this with a cruise bursary, which will pay for the person's flights and a hotel night if necessary. There are no other costs onboard.

Two berths available on upcoming cruise to Rainbow hydrothermal field in the Mid Atlantic Ridge

The cruise will be onboard the RV Marcus Langseth, from April 10th (departure St. George, Bermuda) through May 19th (arrival Ponta Delgada, Azores), 2013.

There are 2 berths available for international collaborators interested in mid-ocean ridge research, with the support of InterRidge through its Cruise Bursary Scheme.
- one berth for a postdoc or early-career scientist, ideally with expertise in multichannel seismic reflection data acquisition and processing, and/or multibeam bathymetry mapping.
- one berth for a graduate student or post-doc.

Cruise bursary available for equatorial Atlantic cruise (now closed)

An InterRidge cruise bursary is available for an early-career scientist, to enable participation on a cruise to deploy 3 hydrophones in the equatorial Atlantic. The chief scientist is Deborah Smith (WHOI). The cruise departs from and returns to Bridgetown, Barbados. The dates of the cruise are June 22 – July 9, 2012. Cruise berths requested on SMS cruises

Aquila Tawake, IR National Correspondent for SOPAC, has requested berth space on SMS cruises, to support selected Pacific Island Countries nationals' participation in deep sea mineral surveys as part of its capacity building initiative. Any participants will be funded by SOPAC. If you are on a cruise with spare berths and can offer this opportunity, please contact the InterRidge Office in the first instance. (coordinator@interridge.org).

Cruise bursary available: Nascent Inter-Ridge Volcanism And Neotectonic Activity (TAN1213:NIRVANA) - now closed

A voyage to the Kermadec arc and Havre Trough on the research vessel Tangaroa will be conducted in October 2012. This is a multidisciplinary voyage that aims to: 1) acquire multichannel seismic reflection data on Kermadec arc ridges, including a pseudo-3-dimensional experiment on Brothers Volcano; 2) collect multibeam echo-sounder data – including the entire water column - over seamounts and rifts; and 3) collect rock and biological specimens from Havre Trough rifts.

Six InterRidge cruise bursary students currently on cruises

Six InterRidge-funded students are currently participating on cruises in the Pacific and Atlantic, courtesy of InterRidge's cruise bursary scheme.


Berta Biescas-Gorriz (Dalhousie University), Guillermo Bornstein and Jhon Fredy Mojica-Moncada (both at CSIC, Barcelona) are participating in Suzanne Carbotte's cruise to the Juan de Fuca plate as part of a complex program involving both the R/V Langseth and the R/V Oceanus.
