BISMaL, a new biological database online at JAMSTEC's Global Oceanographic Data Center

JAMSTEC has just launched a new database, Biological Information System for Marine Life (BISMaL), online at the Global Oceanographic Data Center (GODAC):
http://www.godac.jp/portal/page/portal/GDC/GPSS216/TAB_TOP
You can search marine species including those from deep-sea vents and seeps around the Japan Islands and browse photographs, descriptions on morphology/ecology, videos, sample records, and references of each species.

Scientific questions and recommendations from the InterRidge Seafloor Mineralization Working Group

The InterRidge Working Group on Seafloor Mineralization (SMWG) has developed three groups of questions and recommendations to advance the scientific knowledge of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits:
What are the spatial controls on hydrothermal activity and SMS deposition?
What are the timescales for the evolution of SMS deposits?
What are the changes in biological communities that occur during the evolution of an SMS deposit?
Recommendations range from developing a list of criteria to quantify the extent of activity at a hydrothermal vent site, to using cutting‐edge technology to locate and characterize inactive deposits, to encouraging biological studies of inactive and extinct SMS deposits.

High Throughput Project Listings

The InterRidge Vent Ecology Working Group would like to encourage interactions between researchers with common interests in high-throughput genomic approaches for the study of deep-sea hydrothermal vent organisms. For the current list of high-throughput projects, please see: http://www.interridge.org/highthroughput Please feel free to submit your high-throughput listing here: http://www.interridge.org/node/add/highthroughput

Preview to 2009 InterRidge Newsletter: Oceanic Core Complex - Atlantis Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge 30°N

The cover of the 2009 InterRidge Newsletter will highlight research on oceanic core complexes. As a preview to this year's upcoming issue, we posted here the PDF for an article that will be included in the section for International Research at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge:
"Seismic Velocity Variation within the Footwall of an Oceanic Core Complex - Atlantis Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge 30°N"

2008 Update

Monitoring and Observatories
Working Group Update 2008

Chairs - J. Escartin (IPGP, France) & R. Santos (Univ. Azores, Portugal)

Revised mandate for the WG
Our WG started in 2001 as part of the Event Detection and Response and Observatories WG, and the combined WG was renamed the Monitoring and Observatories WG in 2002. The original mandate for our WG was “to encourage multidisciplinary studies at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, with the ultimate goal of developing observatory-type efforts on the Azores area, encompassing the Lucky Strike, Menez Gwen and Rainbow hydrothermal vents, to characterize this portion of the ridge and understand the integration of tectonic, volcanic, biological and hydrothermal systems in space and time.”

2008 Update

Mantle Imaging
Working Group Update 2008

Chair - N. Seama (Kobe Univ., Japan)

The WG for Mantle Imaging was formed in 2008 and currently includes members from 4 countries (China, France, Japan, and USA). Our WG membership is still being developed.
The key scientific questions to be addressed by imaging the mantle beneath spreading centers are: 1) clarifying mantle dynamics associated with different ridge systems, and

2008 Update

Long-Range Ridge Exploration
Working Group Update 2008

Chair - C. Devey (IFM-GEOMAR, Germany)

The WG for Long-Range Ridge Exploration was formed in 2008 and currently includes members from 8 countries (Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, UK, and USA). The plan for this WG is to identify vehicles with the necessary reliability, depth and endurance capability for long-range exploration of the mid-ocean ridge, define standard sensor packages and standardise calibration and data processing,

2008 Update

Deep Earth Sampling
Working Group Update 2008

B. Ildefonse, Working Group Chair

Members
The WG for Deep Earth Sampling has one new member in 2008: Huaiyang Zhou (Tongji University, China).

2008 Update

Biogeochemical Interactions at Deep-Sea Vents Working Group Update 2008 N. Le Bris, Working Group Chair Members The WG for Biogeochemical Interactions at Deep-Sea Vents had one new change in membership for 2008. Huaiyang Zhou has joined the IR WG for Deep-Earth Sampling, and we invited Xiqiu Han (Second Institute of Oceanography, China) to join our WG in replacement. Xiqiu's expertise in oxygen and carbon isotopic signatures of chemosynthetic processes fits perfectly with the WG objectives, and she will bring a complementary view from China.

New SCOR Working Group: "Hydrothermal energy transfer and its impact on ocean carbon cycles"

InterRidge is pleased to announce the approval of a new SCOR Working Group in Oct. 2008, to be co-funded by InterRidge, on "Hydrothermal energy transfer and its impact on ocean carbon cycles." This new Working Group (SCOR WG 135) is co-chaired by Nadine Le Bris (IFREMER, France) and Chris German (WHOI, USA). The proposal was developed from discussions at the InterRidge Theoretical Institute (IRTI) on Biogeochemical Interaction at Deep-Sea Vents, held in September 2007.
