InterRidge Info #10/2018 (30th May 2018)

1) [SCOR - InterRidge Meeting on Indian Ocean] The SCOR - InterRidge Meeting on "Mid-Ocean Ridges and Other Geological Features of the Indian Ocean" will take place on 14-16 November, 2018, in Goa, India.
This meeting aims to encourage involvement of the Ridge and Marine Geology and Geophysics communities in the International Indian Ocean Expedition - 2 (IIOE-2). The budget allocated by SCOR and InterRidge will mostly be used to allow students, young scientists, or other scientists to participate, with special attention given to countries bounding the Indian Ocean and potentially involved in the IIOE-2.
The following seven themes cover the main peculiarities of the Indian Ocean ridges and geology. Scientists interested by these themes are invited to join the meeting and mark the dates. Further announcements regarding registration, abstract submission, and practical aspects will appear in a near future.
2) [Brief report from IR OTF Workshop] The first workshop of the InterRidge Working Group on Oceanic Transforms took place from 22nd to 24th May in Brest/Plouzané (France). The workshop was attended by 40 international scientistsfrom 7 specialities. Five attendants were supported by InterRidge travel bursaries: 3 from USA, 1 from China and 1 from Germany. Participants dedicated the first day and a half for oral presentations and poster session discussing the state of the art on transform faults (TF) and fracture zones (FZ) concerning all aspects of the mechanics, petrology, structure, morphology and dynamics of the system. The acronym Transform Fault System (TFS) has been proposed to identify the whole tectonic system from the active part to its prolongation into the drifting plates. Afterwards, the attendants discussed all aspects necessary to identify the key questions for a comprehensive understanding of TFS. Experiments were proposed on how to answer basic questions on imaging the TF to FZ transition and thermo-mechanical, compositional alteration and stress-strain relationships to constraint physical parameters that control the TFS evolution through time. A major point was to find appropriate target regions where to apply these experimental approaches. Two major outcomes of the workshop are: the need to systematically integrate modelers to the exploratory and experimental actions and the need for high frequency investigation of TFS over long time stretches. To achieve this aim, the participants propose to launch a call for white papers addressing the different aspects putting together integrated experimental and modeling approaches to the main TFS problematic. It also appears necessary to sustain the exchange in the community by dedicated workshops and/or sessions at AGU-EGU. The complete report will be published soon.

5) [Global Seamounts Project - call for participation] Global Oceans, together with a Steering Committee and Science Advisory Committee of leading seamount and modeling scientists, has developed The Global Seamounts Project (GSP), a new multidisciplinary global expedition and research project designed to accelerate our understanding of complex ecosystem function and inter-connectivity on seamounts. GSP will survey a range of 18 seamounts in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean basins, over eighteen expeditions beginning in 2019 and continuing through 2023. The project will generate standardized sets of inter-calibrated, multidisciplinary field data over the survey range to develop a new ecosystem model for seamounts. The project, developed by a team of seamounts scientists and ecosystem modelers, is inviting scientists from a wide range of disciplines and regions to express interest in participating. 1) [InterRidge Workshop on Oceanic Transform Faults] Forty-nine scientists have registered to the InterRidge Workshop on Oceanic Transform Faults held from 22nd to 24th May 2018 in Brest/Plouzané (France). The lists of participants and of keynote speakers are on-line, please visit the workshop website to find the most important information.
The Organizing Committee has awarded five travel grants to encourage the participation of young scientists. Congratulations to:

2) [IR Steering Committee meeting] The InterRidge Steering Committee is an assembly of representatives from the Principal and Regular Member Nations of InterRidge. Principal Member Countries have two voting representatives while Regular Member Countries have one. Each Corresponding Member Country has a national correspondent who is welcome as observer at the annual Steering Committee meeting. Working Group Leaders are also invited at the meetings to report on their activity. The Steering Committee monitors the activity of the InterRidge Office and decides on all matters of importance for the program (scientific strategies, actions to be taken, procedures, budget…) that the Office will execute.
This year, the Steering Committee meeting will take place in Bergen (Norway) on 20 – 22 June. Thanks to Norwegian team for their invitation. The list of items to be discussed at the meeting is now open and you are encouraged to send your suggestions to your National Correspondent and/or the InterRidge Office.
3) [Call for Review of 2018 SCOR Working Group Proposals] Nine working group proposals have been submitted for consideration at the annual SCOR meeting in 2018 (see proposals here). SCOR welcomes input from national SCOR committees, partner organizations, and any other groups and individuals interested in sending comments.
The specific instructions are available in the Call for WG Proposals. Comments are due by 1st August 2018. Decisions on which group(s) will be funded will be made at the SCOR annual meeting from 4thto 7th September 2018 in Plymouth, UK. Please contact Ed Urban if you have any questions about this process.
4) [Call for Applications for Pool of Experts for World Ocean Assessment-II] The UN World Ocean Assessment-II (WOA-II) is looking for applications for its Pool of Experts. These individuals will help draft the sections of the WOA-II. The application form and list of topics for which expertise is needed can be found here. The deadline for the first round of nominations is 30th April 2018.

InterRidge Info #6/2018 (27^th March 2018)

1) [IR workshop – deadlines & info] The deadline for the registration for the first workshop of the InterRidge Working Group on Oceanic Transforms in Brest/Plouzané (France) is 20th April 2018. The deadline for application submissions to the Young Scientist Travel Support has been fixed on 31st March 2018. The received applications will be evaluated during the first week of April and the results will be announced immediately. We remind that the grants are intended to help with the travel expenses but will not cover the entire travel costs. More information on hotels and travel to Brest can be found here.
2) [Research Topic “Pacific Deep-Sea Discoveries: Geological and Biological Exploration, Patterns, and Processes”] In collaboration with the Deep-Sea Environments and Ecology section of Frontiers in Marine Science, Diva Amon, William Chadwick, Stephen Hammond and Randi Rotjan (host editors) are organizing a Research Topic “Pacific Deep-Sea Discoveries: Geological and Biological Exploration, Patterns, and Processes”. The aim of this project is to bring together international experts to provide a comprehensive view of the recent exploration, information, discoveries, and research findings from the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean.
If you would like to contribute, please submit your abstract for evaluation by the Topic Editors by 1st May 2018. Manuscripts are due by 7th January 2019. More information about this project can be found here.
3) [15th DSBS – deadlines] The 15th Deep-Sea Biology Symposiumis the main event for the Deep-Sea Biology Society, and takes place every three years. The 15th Deep-Sea Biology Symposium is supported by the Deep-Sea Biology Society and co-hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The 15th meeting will be held from 9th to 14th September 2018 in Monterey, California, USA. Abstract submission, travel award applications and early registration close on 30th March 2018.
4) [2018 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Marine Microbes] The theme of the 2018 Marine Microbes GRC is "Elucidating Microbial Processes Across Spatial and Temporal Scales". The meeting will take place from 1st to 6th July 2018 in Lucca (Italy). This GRC will discuss research initiatives aimed at interrogating, interpreting and integrating microbial processes that shape, connect and control ecosystem interactions and biogeochemical cycles and help to put the "form, flow and function" of microbial genes, activities and processes in an Earth system context. Applications for this GRC meeting must be submitted by June 3, 2018.
This GRC will be held in conjunction with the "Marine Microbes" Gordon Research Seminar (GRS). Those interested in attending both meetings must submit an application for the GRS in addition to an application for the GRC. The seminar chair will select speakers from abstracts submitted byMarch 30, 2018. Applications for participation to this GRS meeting must be submitted by June 2, 2018. Please apply early, as some meetings become full before the deadlines.
5) [ECORD Facility Board of the IODP – call for applications] The European Consortium of Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) is now accepting applications from active, leading international scientists to serve as Science Board Members on the ECORD Facility Board, the key forum for planning International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) mission-specific platform (MSP) expeditions, operated by ECORD. The new members are expected to serve for three years, starting 1st January 2019. Deadline for applications is on 7th May 2018. Click here for more information.

InterRidge Info #5/2018 (13^th March 2018)

1) [Review by IR WG connectivity] InterRidge Working Group on Ecological Connectivity and Resilience, chaired by Anna Metaxas and Lauren Mullineaux, has recently published a review entitled "Exploring the Ecology of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents in a Metacommunity Framework" in Frontiers in Marine Science. Congratulations to authors for this thorough review of current knowledge and gaps on the mechanisms supporting the stability of vent meta-communities, of high relevance to the assessment of impacts at regional scales and design of protection plans! 2) [24th annual session of the ISA] Nadine Le Bris and Jérôme Dyment, co-chairs of InterRidge, attended the 24th Session of the Council of International Seabed Authority that took place in Kingston on 5-9 March 2018, preceding a session of the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC). The revised schedule of ISA meetings implies that the Council will have a second meeting this year on 16-20 July, following the meetings of the LTC and ahead of the General Assembly annual meeting (23-27 July).
The primary foci of the meeting were the development of Regional Environmental Management Plans (REMPs) (ISBA/24/C/3) and the formulation of advices to the LTC regarding the draft regulations for exploitation of mineral resources in the Area (ISBA/23/LTC/CRP.3*). Workshops involving all stakeholders will be held in 2018 on REMPs in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Indian Ocean triple junction, and the Clarion-Clipperton nodule area in the Pacific. As a fundamental principle, the draft regulations for exploitation of mineral resource in the area should reflect the provision of the UNCLOS. Discussions in informal mode focused on the economic, environmental, and legal aspects of the draft, with a special attention given to the comments sent by the stakeholders (ISBA/24/C/CRP.1).
The InterRidge observer status allowed to emphasize the importance of up-to-date knowledge bases, interdisciplinary integration and international cooperation as proposed by InterRidge in supporting best available evidence and expertise for the assessment of risks, elaboration of norms and management plans in this context. InterRidge reminded the Council "the crucial need of fundamental knowledge to answer questions on the vulnerability of ecosystems, the scales and intensity of environmental perturbations, the cumulative impacts of climate change and exploitation. This should involve all willing research teams, beyond those associated with the permit holders".
3) [IR Fellowships and Cruise Bursaries] The applications for InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship of Julia Machon, Inmaculada Frutos and Guangyu Xu have been accepted for funding. The application of Thomas N. Guigère for the InterRidge Cruise Bursaries has also been validated by the Steering Committee.
4) [IR workshop - reminder] Advanced PhD and first year post-doctoral researchers are invited to apply for grants helping with travel expenses to reach the first workshop of the InterRidge Working Group on Oceanic Transform Faults. The workshop will be held from 22nd to 24th May 2018 at the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (IUEM) in Brest (France). All participants are invited to register here.

InterRidge Info #4/2018 (20^th February 2018)

1) [IR workshop] The first workshop of the InterRidge Working Group on Oceanic Transform Faults will be held from 22nd to 24th May 2018 at the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (IUEM) in Brest (France). The first day will be dedicated to keynote talks about transform faults, fracture zones and related topics. The second day will split the participants into different round tables to discuss the state of the art and the main scientific questions and strategies to address them in the near future. The third day will allow a general discussion and the writing of the workshop recommendations. The final program will be available soon.
Young scientists participation is encouraged by a limited number of grants helping with the travel expenses. Advanced PhD and first year post-doctoral researchers are invited to apply to the grants through the registration form.

2) [Call for SCOR Working Group Proposals] SCOR is now accepting proposals for new SCOR Working Groups. Proposals are due by 12:00 PM UCT on 16th April 2018. Proposals will be posted on the 2018 SCOR Annual Meeting Website and open to review by national SCOR committees and others until 1st August 2018. Decisions about which proposals will be funded will be made at the annual SCOR meeting on 4 – 6 September 2018 and new groups will start in 2019.
3) [InterRidge Session at the GeoBonn 2018 meeting] The Geo(Bonn) is the annual meeting of the German geoscientific societies. This year, the meeting takes place on 2-6th September in Bonn, Germany. The special session 2A: "InterRidge: Multidisciplinary research on oceanic ridges" is co-organized by Philipp A. Brandl (GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel) and Wolfgang Bach (MARUM, Universität Bremen). Click here for more information about themes and sessions. A) The Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute is organizing an International Workshop: “Marine Mineral Resources of Continental Shelf and Deep Ocean Floor - current stage of knowledge and perspectives” that will take place on 18 – 21 September 2018 in Gdańsk (Poland). The deadline both for registration and abstract submission is on 16th April 2018.
B) The 47th Underwater Mining Conference is presented by the International Marine Minerals Society in partnership with the K.G. Jensen Centre for Deep Sea Research at the University of Bergen and Global Centres of Expertise (GCE) Subsea. The conference will take place on 10 – 14 September 2018 in Grieghallen, Bergen (Norway). Abstract Deadline: 30th April 2018.

InterRidge Info #2/2018 (23^rd January 2018)

1) [Joint InterRidge-SCOR Workshop on the Indian Ocean Ridges] Following an invitation by SCOR (Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research), the InterRidge Steering Committee has decided to support the organization of the Joint InterRidge-SCOR Workshop on the Indian Ocean Ridges. Discussions with SCOR on the workshop organization are currently starting.
The Indian Ocean offers many scientific prospects for the ridge community. The ultraslow spreading SWIR remains the focus of cutting edge researches on poorly magmatic seafloor spreading after having been opened to science by InterRidge in the 1990s. The intermediate SEIR has been the playground for major experiments on the mantle geochemistry variability and the transition between dome (EPR-type) and axis (MAR-type) styles of spreading. The slow CIR is cut by major transform faults on a large part and remains a natural laboratory for distant ridge-hotspot interactions. All three ridges are the focus of hydrothermal exploration as well, with 4 out of 6 exploration permits on seafloor massive sulfides delivered by ISA so far. To this should be added the first observation of unique hydrothermal species adaptation and the recognition of its unique biogeographic distribution patterns, with promises of major discoveries as the biological exploration expands.
As all InterRidge member countries have recently had experiments on the Indian ridges, this meeting will be a great opportunity to share results and discuss opportunities of collaboration to go further, with the help of the Second International Indian Expedition (IIOE) which has started in 2017 but lacks involvement of the ridge community (both geosciences and biology-ecology). The meeting may take place in Fall 2018, details will be announced soon.
2) [Vote on the venue for the 7th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems (CBE7)] A new 3-year cycle will place the next CBE meeting in 2020. CBE6 Organizers, Deep-Sea Biology Society & InterRidge are pleased to announce three applications to host the meeting:
1. Guarujá, Brazil. Institutional host: Oceanographic Institute, University of São Paulo
2. Wellington, New Zealand. Institutional host: National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)
3. Horta, Azores. Institutional host: University of Azores

3) [IR Cruise Bursary] InterRidge supports Cruise Bursaries to help early career ridge-crest scientists to participate in mid-ocean ridge research cruises. Last year, the organizers of Cocos-Nazca Rift Cruise have offered 2 to 5 spare berths for early-career scientists wishing to join this cruise. Having received many applications, InterRidge will fund two cruise bursaries for Dominik Zawadzki from Poland and for Elvira Latypova from Russia. Bursaries are awarded for travel and subsistence costs required to join the cruise.
4) [Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Ocean Biogeochemistry] The next Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Ocean Biogeochemistry will be held in July 2018 in Hong Kong, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. There will also be an associated Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Ocean Biogeochemistry for early-career researchers. The topic of the July 2018 GRC and GRS will be Biogeochemistry of Marine Interfaces.

5) [Anne Warner Research Fellow] Applications are invited for the endowed Anne Warner Research Fellowship in the area of Cell and Molecular Biology of Marine Organisms. The Marine Biological Association (MBA), a leading-edge independent marine research institute, has supported the experimental work of many Research Fellows over the past 125 years. The MBA’s current research groups are made up of world-leading marine biologists tackling important questions facing our marine environment. The MBA wish to appoint to this Fellowship an outstanding scientist seeking to develop an independent research group that will complement existing research strengths.
The closing date for applications is 19th February 2018.

1) [Working Groups met at AGU Fall Meeting] Last AGU Fall Meeting in New Orleans, with an attendance of more than 23000 participants, was an opportunity for many InterRidge members to meet and exchange new ideas. Members of two InterRidge Working Groups have organized meetings. Members of the InterRidge Working Group on Circum-Antarctic Ridges met to discuss future plans. Members of the InterRidge Working Group on Oceanic Transforms convened their first meeting to summarize the goals and pending actions following creation of the WG at the last InterRidge Steering Committee meeting. The participants discussed the opportunity of having a first workshop in Spring 2018. The workshop date will be soon announced after consulting the absent WG members.
2) [UNGA Adopts Resolutions on Oceans] In December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted two resolutions that aim to advance implementation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and support the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks and marine life in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). Member States also discussed an international legally binding instrument under UNCLOS, and other documents related to the law of the sea. The UNGA also designated 2021-2030 as the ‘Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development’ to enhance international cooperation on research and scientific programmes to better manage ocean and coastal zone resources and reduce maritime risks. 3) [CBE7 – last call for organizers of the next meeting] International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems is switching to a 3-year cycle. The next meeting (CBE7) will be held in 2020. Groups interested in hosting the next CBE meeting are now invited to submit their proposals in the form of a 2-page document that describes the proposed venue, anticipated range of costs, anticipated dates and number of delegates, benefits of hosting the meeting in the proposed venue, and any other relevant information. The proposals will be collected and made available online for a vote by the community. The proposals should be submitted to cbe2017@whoi.edu by 15th January 2018.
4) [Other meetings] NASA will be sponsoring the 3rd Ocean Worlds meeting, held on 21-24 May 2018, at the Lunar and Planetary Institute, Universities Space Research Association (USRA) in Houston (Texas, USA). The theme of the meeting will be on rock-water interactions and their potential to host chemosynthetic life. As such, the meeting Chair and host, Dr Louise Prockter (LPI Director) as well as NASA HQ program managers, are keen to solicit active participation from among all relevant components of the Ocean Science community - from subseafloor geophysics via the seabed to ocean biogeochemistry and microbiology.
Deadline for expressions of interest: 12th January 2018. Abstracts submissions: 7th March 2018.
