1. InterRidge Info
1.1. Call for applications to join IODP Expedition 349 to South China Sea
The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program has begun accepting applications for scientific participants on Expedition 349 to the South China Sea aboard the JOIDES Resolution in January-March 2014.
This expedition will focus on the timing and mechanisms of opening of the South China Sea, and its implications for East Asian and western Pacific tectonic and paleoenvironmental evolution.
The drilling plan aims to reach the oceanic basement in order to recover both oceanic basalts and overlying sediments. The drilling sites are designed strategically to determine timing of both onset and termination of seafloor spreading in different sub-basins. The drilling will also allow geochemical samplings of basement rocks at different ages and around key tectonic events.
The scientific objectives of the expedition will focus on the following themes:
(1) Cenozoic mechanisms, timings, sequences, and affiliations of seafloor spreading;
(2) Oceanic crustal accretion and mantle evolution;
(3) Paleoceanographic and sedimentary responses to tectonic evolution of the South China Sea;
(4) Late Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic pre-rifting tectonic transitions and driving forces of continental margin break-up and seafloor spreading.
The deadline to apply is April 1, 2013. The proposal may be found at:
http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/expeditions/south_china_sea.html
Co-chief Scientist: Chun-Feng Li (Tongji University, China)
Co-chief Scientist: Jian Lin (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA)
Staff Scientist: Denise Kulhanek (IODP, Texas A&M University
This expedition is scheduled for January 28-March 30, 2014.

1.2. Cruise bursary available for OCEANOGRAFLUX cruise TO MAR, June 2013 - final call
The Chief Scientists on the OCEANOGRAFLUX cruise are offering a spare berth to an early-career scientist and InterRidge is supporting this with a cruise bursary, which will pay for the person's flights and a hotel night if necessary. There are no other costs onboard.
The goal of the study is to track off-axis hydrothermal circulations using heat-flow measurements (about 250 POGO type measurements) and interstitial fluid chemistry in sediment cores (about 30 Küllenberg cores are planned). There will be also CHIRP processing during the transits. The study area is south Azores at 35 °N just south of Oceanographer FZ. The cruise is scheduled from June 9th to July 8th, but it could be shifted by a few days.

1. InterRidge Info
1.1. Welcome letter from John Chen, InterRidge Chair
On behalf of the InterRidge community, as the current InterRidge Chair and Co-Chair, we thank Bramley Murton, Jon Copley and Debbie Milton from the UK InterRidge Office for their leadership and great service to the InterRidge community during the past three years. Under their leadership the UK InterRidge Office has expanded IR national memberships by adding Canada and Portugal to the Associate Member list and has started new initiatives such as the cruise bursary scheme, which has benefited dozens of young students at the very beginning of their scientific career. Starting from January 1, 2013 the InterRidge Office has moved to Peking University for the next three years.
As the Chair and Co-Chair and the IR Coordinator (name to be announced later) at the China InterRidge Office, we will cherish the success of InterRidge and put out a strong lead for the next three years. Continuing the current policies, we will devote substantial effort and resources into nurturing collaboration within the IR community, particularly involving developing countries and countries of emerging economies. We strongly believe that InterRidge should act as an active coordinator for facilitating the exchange of scientists and their ideas among the scientific community.
Finally, we need the support from all of you, the InterRidge community, and we will listen and communicate with you all throughout the tenure of the IR office in China. Let’s work together to evolve InterRidge to a new stage.
Thank you,
Y. John Chen and Jiabiao Li

Expedition 345 is the second drilling program at the Hess Deep Rift to study crustal accretion processes at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise (EPR). The expedition is taking advantage of well-surveyed crustal exposures to recover the first cores of young, primitive plutonic rocks that comprise the lowermost ocean crust. The principal objective for drilling at Hess Deep is to test competing hypotheses of magmatic accretion and hydrothermal processes at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges.
