The InterRidge Office is pleased to announce the launch of the 2017 Student and Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. As part of InterRidge’s mission to promote international, collaborative, and interdisciplinary studies of oceanic spreading centers, we invite proposals for InterRidge Student and Postdoctoral Fellowships of up to 5000 US$ each. These Fellowships are designed to encourage international collaboration on any aspect of ridge-crest science by graduate students or postdoctoral researchers, fostering long-standing partnerships for their future careers. The Fellowships can be used for any field of ridge-crest research. Proposals out of this scope will not be considered. These awards may be used, for instance, for cruise participation or laboratory work by adding an international dimension to the Fellow’s research.
In 2017 we may offer up to 6 IR Fellowships including 3 joint IR-ISA Endowment Fund Fellowships. Fellowships funded by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Endowment Fund are open either to graduate students or postdocs from developing countries, or to young scientists from any other country if the application demonstrates that it will benefit ridge-related science in developing countries.
The International Seabed Authority Endowment Fund promotes and encourages the conduct of collaborative marine scientific research in the international seabed area for the benefit of humankind through two main activities by:
- supporting the participation of qualified scientists and technical personnel from developing countries in marine scientific research programs and activities,
- providing opportunities to these scientists to participate in relevant initiatives.
All application materials are to be submitted electronically to the InterRidge Coordinator (interridge@ipgp.fr) by 6th June 2017 13th June 2017 [new deadline].
Required Application Materials
ALL applications:
- InterRidge Fellowship application form
Applicants wishing to be considered by the ISA Endowment Fund must ALSO complete:
- ISA Endowment Fund Proposal form
- any additional CV’s for developing country personnel.
Amount and Duration of Fellowship
The amount awarded to each successful applicant will be determined based on the project needs and is up to 5000 US$ per Fellowship. The Fellowship must be used within 1 year from the date the Fellowship is awarded.
Proposal and Application Review
Research proposals and related documents should be written in English. They will be reviewed for scientific merit by two topic-relevant reviewers, one a native- and the other a non-native English speaker. All applications will be ranked based on the quality and expected significance of the work as well as the opportunity provided by the Fellowship to the applicant.
For InterRidge-funded Fellowships, the final selection will be made by the InterRidge Steering Committee. For the three Fellowships to be funded by the ISA Endowment Fund, the InterRidge Steering Committee will provide the highest-ranked of these applications to the ISA Endowment Fund Advisory Panel for final selection.
All successful Fellows will be announced at the end of July 2017.
Award Reporting Requirements
IR Fellows will be featured on our website and in the annual InterRidge News. Fellows will be required to submit one interim progress report and one final report upon completion of the Fellowship.
Fellowships supported by the ISA Endowment Fund will also require a final report from the applicant’s advisor. In addition, four years after the award, InterRidge will request feedback from awardees to provide an assessment of longer-term impacts of the Fellowship.
