Recent InterRidge-Supported Meetings
InterRidge has provided funding (up to US$ 500) for Student and Postdoc Travel Awards to increase the participation of students and postdocs at the symposium. The Travel Awards have been distributed on a need basis to students and postdocs who were presenting research falling under the scope of InterRidge, broadly defined in The Third Decadal Plan 2014-2023 'From ridge crest to deep-ocean trench: Formation and Evolution of the Oceanic Crust and Its Interaction with the Ocean, Biosphere, Climate and Human Society'.
InterRidge sponsored two sessions at this meeting:

- Deep Subseafloor Biosphere
"Ridges and Hotspots around the Mascarene Island" international conference
3-7 September 2012, Bel Ombre, Mauritius
This meeting covered the following topics:
- Mid ocean ridges processes: volcanism, tectonics, and hydrothermalism
- Hotspots, ridges, and their interactions
- The fate of volcanic islands: from construction to destruction with a focus on the Mascarene Islands and the nearby Indian Ocean.
The meeting was supported by InterRidge, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and the Mauritius Institute of Oceanography (MOI).

This was the first of several meetings enabled by the recently successful Labex MER initiative, a 10 year “cluster of excellence” program that assembles top-ranked laboratories in the field of marine sciences in western France and ensures their future excellence in research and collaboration. Attendees represented a wide swath of scientific interests, including the kinematic and thermo-mechanical evolution of plates, geodynamic processes at seafloor spreading centers, the geochemistry of hydrothermal fluids and fluid-rock interaction, microbial biogeochemistry and ecosystems in extreme environments.
The metal potential of a slow-spreading ridge segment

This workshop, hosted by GEOMAR, brought together scientists with backgrounds in geology, geophysics, modeling and engineering, but who all had an interest in hydrothermal mineralization processes at slow-spreading ridges. The goal of the workshop was to develop a framework for an integrated study of the metal content of a slow-spreading ridge segment with a multi-disciplinary approach that combines geological and geophysical studies and uses the latest technological advances in marine surveying.

The aim of the workshop was to establish standardised methods for assessing the ecological impacts of commercial mineral extraction at seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) deposits. The main objective was the production of guidelines for outlining exploratory survey methodologies at SMS.
Ocean Mantle Dynamics: From Spreading Center to Subduction Zone

Workshop of the Mantle Imaging Working Group where recent developments in the study of the dynamics of the oceanic lithosphere, melt production at oceanic spreading centers and islands arcs, and associated topics were discussed.
Circum-Antarctic Ridges

The mid-ocean ridges around Antarctica have been poorly surveyed, mostly because of their location in high latitudes and areas of rough seas. However, circum-Antarctic Ridges are unique due to their shallow water depths, ultra-slow or intermediate spreading rate, and complicated series of transform offsets compared to low-latitude ridges.
EGU Special Session: Biogeochemical function and diversity of chemosynthetic deep sea ecosystems
3-8 April 2011, Vienna, Austria
Challenging issues remain about the discovery of chemosynthetic ecosystems in remote ocean systems, the temporal dynamics of these ecosystems, their influence on ocean biogeochemical cycles, and their sensitivity to anthropogenic impact. In particular, the mechanisms governing the interactions between chemosynthetic communities and the abiotic environment, and the multitude of microbial metabolisms in sustaining these ecosystems need further investigation, especially with regard to quantification.
Geological Carbon Capture & Storage in Mafic and Ultramafic Rocks

In contrast to the many large pilot studies of CO2 storage into pore space in sedimentary basins, the high carbonation potential of mafic and ultramafic rocks has received relatively little attention. Awaiting report.

The 2010 MoHole workshop in Kanazawa, Japan, followed on from several recent scientific planning meetings on ocean lithosphere drilling. These previous meetings reached consensus that a deep hole through a complete section of fast‐spread ocean crust is a renewed priority for the ocean lithosphere community.
Workshop report Design of Marine Protected Areas for Chemosynthetic Ecosystems Potentially Threatened by Human Activities in the Deep Sea

Chemosynthetic ecosystems – hydrothermal vents and seeps – are (1) areas of unique biodiversity and scientific interest, and (2) targeted for seafloor mining (vents) and hydrocarbon extraction (seeps). At present, there is no strategy based on sound scientific principles to apply spatially based management to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem function in deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems and their residuals.

International Data Exchange Workshop

This international workshop, co-sponsored by MARGINS, InterMARGINS, Ridge2000, and InterRidge, is designed for scientists, data managers, and data policy makers to explore new opportunities for scientific research that take advantage of recent rapid growth in digital data collections and data systems technology. Current international efforts in Geoinformatics relevant for studies of continental margin and mid-ocean ridge processes will be highlighted and approaches - technical as well as political - for enhanced open exchange of key data of broad scientific interest will be explored. Polar Ridges Workshop

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest and work on mid-ocean ridges in the polar regions, especially the Arctic ridges. This is because of their key role in the formation of mid-ocean ridge basaltic melts, the breakup of continents, the evolution of life on Earth, ocean circulation and climate. Mission Moho Workshop - Understanding the Formation and Evolution of the Oceanic Lithosphere

The Mission Moho workshop, co sponsored by IODP-MI, the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Ridge 2000 and InterRidge. It was convened to discuss and prioritize scientific objectives to be addressed by scientific ocean drilling, as part of our strategy to study the formation and evolution of the ocean lithosphere. It directly addressed InterRidge Deep Earth Sampling objectives to identify further the sub-seafloor biosphere, and to achieve total penetration of ocean crust, through international, collaborative, and multidisciplinary projects. Mid-Atlantic Ridge Symposium

This symposium, focused on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) between 15° - 40°N, marked the completion of the FARA (French American Ridge Atlantic) project. Results obtained by FARA and other national and international projects in this region were reviewed. Eighty scientists from eight nations presented their recent research. The symposium incorporated some forty oral presentations and thirty posters and was planned primarily around sessions covering different portions of the ridge rather than by theme, hence emphasising the interdisciplinary nature of the research that has taken place.
